Hi ladies,

Last time we used Palmers, it worked really well in preventing stretch marks, cept on my breasts, I dont know why I didnt think to put it on that region...

I've started using the Palmers oil daily again to hopefully prevent anymore...

Has anyone else started? And what are you using?

I have heard Bio Oil from the chemists is good.
But i am using an oil mix from my naturopath. I am also starting to take flax seed oil and i have been taking zink each morning for months.

ooh, do we have to start this already?? OH dear, something else to think about! Do the creams really work?? I think I'm prone to stretch marks as I am pretty small but gained 10 kilos in a few years once I hit 20 (I was underweight) and have stretch marks around the butt, hip area. So, not looking forward to more of those!

Unfortunately, I don't think there is any evidence that any of the oils/creams you put on the skin prevent stretch marks. You either get them or you don't :gloomy:

I was sure last time I would get heaps of bright red stretchmarks as I had some on my hips during puberty but amazingly I only got one that is hardly noticeable:smiliedance: I didn't use anything on my skin at all except moisturiser when it felt dry.

I hoping I have the same experience this time :)

I heard it is genetic. You either are pre disposed or not.
I never got one and have 2 kids.
I did use Palmers though??

I used Palmers every day and night last pregnancy, and I didnt get one stretch mark on my tummy, only 2 tiny ones on one breast that quickly disappeared.

Cant speak highly enough of Palmers.

Reminded me, I meant to buy some on the w/e.

The smell of palmers just reminds me of my first pregnancy with DD...

Going to sleep at night smelling it & thinking back... aaawwwww... so sweet....

I've heard its genetic too, but I think if you look after yourself it has to make a difference...

I've been told it's genetic and related to your progesterone levels - the higher the progesterone, the more likely you are to get stretch marks. You need lots of progesterone for healthy development of the placenta, so I'd rather take the progesterone and stretch marks than the alternative!

That said, I have also spoken to people who swear by bio-oil and I just used body butter with DS and didn't get any stretch marks, so who knows??

i once had a lecturer in biology (we were studying the layers of the skin etc) who told the class that stretch marks are hereditary if your mum has them or your sister has them then it is likely you will...he also said that the amount of 'stretch' in your skin works on a negative feedback system. he said that the more cream/oils rubbed onto the skin is registered by the brain who sends a signal to the oil glands in the skin to stop sending oil to the skin as it is not needed. he suggests it is better for your skin to produce the oil rather than putting loads of cream on.
when it was brought up about healthy weight gain during pregnancy he said that also plays an important part as if too much fat cells are lying under the skin then this places added pressure on the collagen fibres in the skin and squashes them which causes the scars.
:detective:
hmmmmm i dont really know as this is will be our first healthy pregnancy but i do know that
- one of my gfs used coconut oil everyday and smeared all over her body and only had a couple of stretch marks on her breasts
- another of my gfs was slack with using creams and she had really deep red stretchmarks all over her tummy, butt and breasts...
from a naturopathic point of view i suppose using an oil that is as closest to the skins natural ph like almond oil, avocado oil or grapeseed oil (although it really does pong!)
i'll be steering away from anything with SLS or propylene glycol in it and using my oil everyday!!! hope it helps :fingerscrossed:
