I don't take in any of what the media says regarding the election, it's always going to swing in favour of one over the other.

I've made my decision so reardless of what programs Kevin Rudd chooses to be on, he still has my vote.

It happens all the time. The media use politicians for ratings, the politicians use media for publicity. It would be expected that politicians would receive a list of the questions before an interview and (depending on the profile of the journo or show) be able to decide which ones they will answer. They will also be able to stipulate whether the journo can raise any further questions after something is said. My exDH is a journo and interviewed Tony Blair during an election campaign. ExDH was not allowed to deviate from the agreed questions and not allowed to ask any more questions to something Blair has said.

Joh BP was apparently a bit of a master at this.

It all depends on your definition of corrupt I guess. If you were a poli wouldn't it make sense to give more interviews to journos whose sympathies align with your own/of the party? (eg KRudd agreeing to be interviewed by Laurie Oaks.)

The media is the ones with the power and they use it for their own gain. Polies manipulate were possible. We never really get to know what truley goes on - just what the media and polies want us to know.

That's my synical view. :)

AM Talkback radio is notoriously right wing for the most part - I don't see Howard going on FM radio and appealing to those who cannot bear to listen to AM shock jocks! People who aren't that interested in politics are more likely to listen to FM stations - it is a smart move for the intending PM to get that kind of exposure.

Howard refused the three debates proposed by Rudd at the beginning of the campaign - is he running from the scrutiny or the worm?

As stated in the article, Rudd has appeared on talkback radio with Neil Mitchell, John Laws and others. Alan Jones hasn't gotten an interview yet and I bet he's hopping mad about it!

I think both candidates have their media strategy, Howard refuses to deviate from his tried-and-true strategy - will it work for him this time?

I think the different media agencies have a definite bias either one way or another.

I'd do exactly the same thing if I were Ruddy.

I mean serioulsy think of the population you reach..

Rove = millions
Meet the Press = my grandpa and maybe my Dad if it doesn't clash with the tennis.

FM radio= millions

AM radio= stuffy old men... and my DH (lmao)

good thinking Kev. :yelclap:

I think Barrie Cassidy is correct in what he says - there are only two programs on tv that are dedicated to politics and Kevin Rudd has appeared on neither.

It's a bit odd too because I would rather answer the questions of Barrie Cassidy than Tony Jones (Lateline) or Kerry O'Brien (7.30 Report). The Insiders is one of the most "politically even" programs there is. I would love to see Rudd on there - other than a few print media sources, it is the only show I watch to inform myself. To appear might be the thing that swings me.

Spoon - I'm not sure what you are angry about as stated in your OP?

Yes don't listen to any am radio for an un-biased view, and certainly don't read the herald sun. Both very politically to the right.

Don't see that it's any different to JH refusing to be interviewed by Triple J once in his whole 11 years in office.

I really enjoy insiders but I think Barrie is having a bit of a dummy spit. I would not think that Rudd would be avoiding Insiders, I would certainly not view Barrie Cassidy as a daunting interviewer, certainly no more so than Tony Jones.

A non issue I would have thought.

Scout I am angry because I think the media should just report the facts and be up for the challenge of keeping their own opinions to themselves unless the general public is made aware that this is the reporters own opinion. It works on all sides of politics, whether you are a Lib or Labor or any other party, I think the principles remain the same.

I am angry because I think this medium is being abused and it has powerful results.

Absolutely! But I do think that he has avoided it quite deliberately.

I completely agree with you. I too enjoy Barrie Cassidy and am disappointed that Rudd won't get a chance to go on. I am fairly certain it isn't a deliberate attempt to avoid the program as I agree with your other point, that program would be no more daunting than many others that he has gone one. It is a shame though.

In my opinion, most of the media sucks, I'm sick of reading BS articles about stuff that doesn't really matter in the end. What matters is the policies. I can't wait until election day.... :hair:

Did anyone watch the Insiders this morning?

Boy, did the panel go Labor! The only time I hear vitriole like that is when Kerry O'Brien interviews Howard. I almost forgot that I was watching the ABC. The view was that Rudd didn't want to face the one-on-one interview with Cassidy because it is a longer interview than others and he has "performed poorly" in other similar one on one interviews.

Cassidy did also say that the report (as originally posted) was incorrect and a "beat up".

Howard chucks tantrums when he does not like the questions. I have never seen Kevin Rudd do the same

I'm not sure that he has a tantrum - but then again neither you nor I are unbiased in our political positions. ;)

....and oh god - I just saw an ad for Today Tonight tomorrow night with Howard and Costello. God, can it get much worse?

You just had to look at Julia Gillard's performance on Insiders - it was a doddle for her - nothing too interesting, kept on message. I do not think that Barrie would be making anyone lose sleep.

Insiders was not as good as usual this week - everyone is getting a big jaded I think this far into the campaign.

Andrew Bolt is so rude and ridiculous, I nearly always enjoy him being on - nearly as funny as Piers Ackerman. The woman nearest to Barrie (and she varies) nearly always seems to be the most intelligent/reasonable.

Does anyone read Annabel Crabb's columns in the SMH - very funny - and she pokes fun at both the Libs and Labor.

'After 34 days of campaigning, Mr Rudd is yet to appear on the ABC's Sunday morning political program Insiders, prompting the program's host to ask whether he is dodging the tough questions.'

Of course the media is corrupt:rolleyes: Whats the point of doing any media interveiws when they will only find a way to twist it against you to fit their own liking and belittle you at every chance they get?

Annabel Crabb is HILARIOUS. She has a fan club on Facebook called Annabel's Flag Hags  She really knows how to turn a phrase. My favourite column this election, by far. Did you read her Heffalump piece?

The day two cunning adventurers fell into their own big Heffalump trap

Annabel Crabb
November 8, 2007

IT WAS reckless talk from Christopher Robin about Heffalumps - those terrifying, shambling creatures - that first planted the idea for Pooh and Piglet.
They would build a Heffalump trap!
You may be familiar with the story; the intrepid pair dig a Very Deep Pit in the woods, in the hope of ensnaring the fabled beast through sheer cunning.
"Pooh rubbed his nose with his paw, and said that the Heffalump might be walking along, humming a little song, and looking up at the sky, wondering if it would rain, and so he wouldn't see the Very Deep Pit until he was halfway down, when it would be too late."
Pooh and Piglet's Heffalump trap was baited with honey, which was a very clever choice of bait.
And it was cunningly disguised, so as to take the fearsome Heffalump completely unawares.
In fact, it was such a brilliant trap that after a while Pooh and Piglet forgot they had even built it, which was around about the point at which they both fell into it.
Three years ago in Australia, another pair of adventurers came up with a similar sort of trap.
One of the adventurers was shortish, with eyebrows of a beetling type, and the other tallish and loudish and sort of pleasingly treasurer-shaped.
Unlike poor Pooh, both of them had quite big brains. And they spent quite a bit of time building their Heffalump trap.
The pit they built was deep and terrifying, with steep, scrabbly sides and a bottom that was so deep that you could yell "Who do you trust?" into it and all you would hear back, after a few minutes, was "…rust?"
It was so big, in fact, that people worried their whole houses might fall into it.
In 2004, it even worked. It caught a Large Shambling Latham, who was walking along, swearing a little bit under his breath and thinking mean thoughts about the President of the United States when he fell into the Heffalump trap with a crash, and was barely heard from again.
But the thing about heffalump traps is that they don't go away.
And if you've been especially clever, and your Heffalump trap is especially cunning and well-disguised and temptingly baited, then there might come a day when you are wandering through the woods, humming a little tune and thinking about honey, when suddenly you step on a piece of the Forest which had been left out by mistake, and you find yourself… in the bottom of your own Heffalump trap.
Which is where our two adventurers found themselves yesterday.
With apologies to A.A. Milne and The Spectator.

very funny - she is my first port of call when opening the online version of SMH - Is she Sydney only or do the Age and other fairfax papers print her column?

well - everyone else's loss. The Age looks pretty interesting too though must start having a peek there - that will put paid to any tiny bit of domestic work I manage to get done
