Hi First time mum to be here determined to use cloth nappies but due to budget using Terry Flat nappies. I dont mind the folding factor i have been practicing different folds and cant wait for Bubba to come (was due yesterday) so that i can start using them. The only thing is so far i only have the PVC covers and a few of the Fluffies covers to use over the nappies. I have been reading some of the posts regarding the use of cloth nappies and noticed that you talk about PUL covers and i was just wondering if its possible to get them to go over the flat nappies as well and if so where would i get them and how much are they?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on your upcoming bubba :yelclap:

A lot of WAHMs do sell their products including covers on the internet, you can check out www.ozclothnappies.org they have links to a lot of aussies and NZ WAHMs sellers. Or try www.nappycino.com which is all about nappies talk forum.

You certainly can use PUL covers with flat nappies, actually this is the cheapest way to start with cloths. I love my Motherease Airflow on flat www.nipnaps.com.au and Tots Bots PUL covers are great as well www.cleverpants.com.au

Other choices for good covers are fleece and wool. I haven't tried wool so can't comment on that but I use fleece covers at night and they're excellet. Most sellers who sell PUL also sell fleece.

Hope this helps and I'm sure a lot of nappies gurus will come and give you better advice :)

Wool is wonderful! It will last forever and rarely needs washing..

Just a few covers i love and know work over terry flats as well as fitteds - I use both are;

at www.babybeehinds.com.au
and these brands
motherease rikki and airflow wraps
bummis super whisper wrap
(try darlingsdownunder.com.au for these)

In packages, you will pay about $15 per cover, and it's recommended you have 3-4 covers per size, so if you have 4 smalls, you have 2 in use (airing and on), 1 in the wash and 1 lost or drying or in the nappy bag.

most PUL covers made to fit over fitted nappies are made to fit over terry squares too.

I also love wool and use it all the time on my son now. www.possumpouches.com.au do some awesome wool covers that are birth - toddler - or you could knit some yourself! Polar fleece is good too, but the covers are hard to come by. Try www.theweewuns.au.com for some fleece ones currently on sale.

Hey :)

welcome to cloth!!!

I just ordered some bummis (PUL covers ) from the weewuns... I am soo excited... they are SO nice (covered in frogs!!)

- the ones at woolworths etc are soo much cheaper - but are DEFINATELY dodgy... the velcro scratches my DS - and the fluffy part of the velcro is honestly pointless... I wish that I had never bothered... should have just spent more in the first place

- the bummis can actually go in your dryer too - so they are made of tough stuff :D

ooooh bring on the fluffy mail... !!!!

I am rather fond of the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap! They really are good! Very durable!

Try www.littlekoala.com.au
The Bummis covers are much cheaper there and you can get cheap prefolds. Prefolds are like flats but much easier to use.

The Pul covers by Motherease and Tots Bots, are from my experience, much softer than the Bummis PUL. They too can be tumbled dried if you're desperate, butover time, PUL will deteriorate if tumble dried too much. PUL is basically dry when you take it our of the machine in any case. Both those brands of covers are very good, if you want waterproofness, but PUl rates low on breathability, comparedto fleece (Polyester) and wool. Tots Bots also make good fleece covers, which are good for overnight. I bought my covers at http://www.nurturenappies.com.au -they have a cover package 4 covers for $72 .
Ultimately, however, the effectiveness of your nappy system relies heavily on the effectiveness of your cover. I would say to buy as good a cover as you can afford. You can use anything to absorb inside a cover, and even if that material is a bit dodgy on the containment side, your cover will help to save the day. I would suggest to use wool overnight-you've got a huge range of possibilities...if you know somebody who can knit, a handknitted woollen cover ("soaker") may be your best option, especially if you just need to buy the wool. Manufactured woolen soakers are more expensive than other makes of cover, but they last for ever, are low maintenance and have the added benefits of being the most natural, breathable cover to use, and the lanolin in the wool has great advantages for your child's skin. I use a Lanacare woolen cover, they're the ants pants! They are pull up style so hold terry squares nice and snugly.
In terms of good fit over terry squares wool is also good because it is trim but stretchy. If you don't get quite the right size with your PUL covers, they can be a bit gapey, and depending on what kind of a nappy fold-er you are, you might ;like the security of a snug fitting cover.
You'll definitely find a cover to suit your needs, as someone else said here, the covers for fitted nappies also fit terry squares. You probably won't find an effective cover in mainstream shops though; you'll need to browse online. Goodluck!
