Well the time has come to book in to a hospital for the birth of bubba number 2 due in March.

As I seem to be lacking the "decision" making ability at the moment I was hoping you guys could help.

I know at the end of the day I will have to make up my own mind but I would love any advice.

here goes.............................................. ....

I had Edison at the Hobart Private almost 2 years ago. At this time we didnt even consider going to Calvary. DH and most of my friends work in the city, we live in Margate and my OB's office is in Macquarie Street.

It just seemed easier.

Anyway all went well, I had a normal VB delivery with no complications. My room was great and the food was apparently Fantastic (so Alex says)

However........................................... .....
Right from the start I got the feeling that the staff didnt like my OB. They seemed almost rude and disrespectful, which made me feel a little uncomfortable.

My OB is on the older side and has been around forever (at least 100 years LOL) and I guess he is kinda stuck in his ways but Dh and I both really like him.

Anyway, about 12 months later I had to go to Calvary for a day procedure with the same OB and I was totally amazed just how different it was.

He was treated like a god, everyone seemed to love him and bend over backwards to help with anything he needed. The atmosphere was happy, he even appeared more relaxed.

So today at my appointment when he mentioned it was time to book in to the hospital I asked him if he had a preference.

He kinda didnt give me a straight answer but asked if I was happy with the Hobart Private when I had Edison, I said yes. I couldnt really tell him the truth :o

On the way out I had a chat to the receptionist who just happens to be his daughter and she said (in a very quiet voice) that Calvary would be his prefered Hospital. BUT at the end of the day it is our decision.

Hmm, what to do????

I think just from your post that you would be a little more at ease if you went to Calvary.

I can't speak from first hand experiance but my Mum, Aunty and 3 cousins have all birthed at Calvary and absolutely loved it there, they didn't have a bad thing to say about it.

Good luck with your decision. :)

All of my family have had their kids at Calvary except for me and my sister. I had both mine at the RHH and my sister had one at RHH and the other at Hobart Private.

Everyone in my family say what a great hospital Calvary is, all the nurses are really good and they've never had any problems.

Your OB isn't Dr Campbell is it? I think he's been around for 100+ years. I had him when I was having DS and found he was a great Dr.

Hey hun!

Dr Campbell is a great Dr! I've had friends go with him and they all rave about him.

I can only speak wonders about the Hobart Private and it's staff. I've had all 4 kids there and each experience has been a perfect one (and Alex is right - the food ROCKS!:)) Nowhere would come more highly recommended!

My advice to you would be to go where ever YOU feel more comfortable - and not worry too much about your Dr's/midwives etc. Whatever their beef is with each other they'll get over it - and if you're really concerned you can say something, after all, you'll be the labouring woman!

From what I've heard about the Calvary, the rooms are very small and I have a couple of friends who went there for their first babies and were left on their own during labour for a long period of time. They then went to the HPH for their 2nd/3rd babies and loved it.

My suggestion would be to go check out the Calvary and get a full tour of the place. Of course the staff will be nice (you'd hope!) but maybe name drop you're Dr and see what the reaction is! LOL! Ask about visiting times, food, what would happen if . . ., hospital scedules etc.
Worst case scenario, you could book into BOTH hospitals until you're 100% decided on which you prefer to go to then cancel the other.

Hope some of that helps!
xoxo

Go to Calvary. :) Ive had other friends go there and they have loved the HOME LIKE atmosphere. :)

And if you feel more comfortable because your doctor is more comfortable, then there really isnt a choice!

Oh and Calvary is closer to me! LOL :p

The reason why the Private isnt that fond of Dr. Campbell is that he wont deliver your baby in a birthing suite on a double bed ( I guess he is as agile as what he use to be!) or so I was told on my Hobart Private tour.

Also be aware that certain doctors deliver at certain hospitals due to the kick backs they recieve from either the hospital itself or the health fund your with...

Either way its your choice and dont be pursaded about which hospital you should go to by anyone. Its your time and you need to feel comfortable, as you already know.

From my experience I like the Private as the nurses will take bub (if you want to) so you can catch up on sleep or want to pop into town.

The rooms and bathrooms are larger which means that they wont be as hot in summertime than the ones in Calvary.

And, obviously Calvary is a Catholic based hospital so thats another aspect that might come into play.

Goodluck with your choice:)

I really wanted to go to Hobart private but my OB only goes to Calvery and I love Dr Reynolds so much I'd have bubs in the middle of Murray street(hee hee) any way I booked in this week to the Calvery and they have told me by march maternity will be revamped and updated(thought it was a bit dated)so I'm over the moon, the service I've had from the midwives and office girls has been fantastic so I am so glad I decided to go to Calvery.was told nurses will take care of bubs if you want a rest, and the religion side of things being a catholic hospital doesnt come into it......Happy decision making.xooxoxox
