View Full Version : Grand Final Politics....
It's great that so many people are showing an interest in politics with an election so close.... but I do wish that more people were interested in a day to day capacity.
It's like at the end of the football season when people who never watch a game all year pick a team and cheer them on.
Politics have such a huge impact on our lives that I think we owe it to ourselves to maintain at least a basic awareness and not just cheer 'labor' or 'liberal' at grand final time.
Do you agree/disagree?
Madi.

I absolutely agree. Politics affects all of us - and to not take an interest is to do yourself a great disservice.
And I so know what you mean by "It's like at the end of the football season when people who never watch a game all year pick a team and cheer them on. " People really do seem to cheer on their team without a friggin' clue what their "team" stands for! It's insane! It is really obvious to those that do take an interest in politics and some people end up looking a wee bit silly.
 Definately agree,
All my friends are always saying lets not talk about politics it's boring etc except for when an election comes around. I think this is how politicians get away with so much because a lot of people do not pay attention  IMO
I have always found it hard going to try and pursuade people to think through who and what they are voting for instead of just following the crowd because "everyone says there good". DH drives me nuts when he says we should vote the same way as USA so we can keep on good terms with them , I have given up with him now!

I can't speak for anyone else but I'm loyal to my 'team' all year.
I too wish people in general were more politically engaged and active. Then we wouldn't have things like WorkChoices just foisted on us without so much as a 'que'? from the general public! It made me proud to see all those people marching in protest against the Invasion of Iraq a couple of years ago - but I think when we didn't follow through and demand more from our elected representatives, the Government took that as license to ignore us and do as they please.
Great thread, Madi! ;)

I agree
I lost faith in my party for a while but I have been won back. Looking forward to the fresh ideas and new leadership!

Actually, this latest election, combined with becoming a mother and getting involved with bubhub discussions has got me interested in politics. It's occured to me that I don't actually know what I stand for on a lot of issues.
Am researching to pick my team to support all season.
