Hello ladies

I had to go see my doctor yesterday just for a check up to make sure everythings going fine all seems to be going great :)
She said to me that i need to start thinking about where i want this bub to be born, which came as a real shock to me as im only 5 weeks preg. She said i can choose any of the hospitals in brisbane but she said she would prefer me to go to logan and thats the one i really dont want to go to even tho its our closest hospital.
I had bryce in grafton nsw which is a smaller country town with only one hospital and was very pleased with my labour there and want it like that again if i can.I used the warm spa heaps through my labour was in and out of there for most of my labour(as i found it helped sooo much!!) untill it came time to start pushing. So there is my main concern i dont think i would have had such a good birth and been pleased with how everything went if it was not for that spa it saved me sooo much!!
Now ive been told that spas are not allowed to be used in labour in qld?? Which scares the **** out of me to be honost.
So im just wondering how the birth centre works at RBWH any info would be great
Sorry its so long just needed to try to explain how i feel hope it all makes sence :o
Thanks

Hi there,

I have had 2 out of my 3 at the birth centre and they were waterbirths...they were wonderful! They were both born underwater:D

The birth centre is one of the only places you can have an actual waterbirth in...as far as I'm aware, you can use the baths in the birth suites (in the main part of the RBWH) for labour (also showers) but you have to get out for the birth.

You will need to put your name down for the ballot in the birth centre (not eveyone gets in.) Your doc will need to fax through a referral to the birth centre (make sure she/he clearly marks it BIRTH CENTRE not BIRTH SUITES) and call them to make sure they receive it. The birth centre doesnt have a catchment area like the main part of the hospital.

They draw the ballot at around 16 weeks of pregnancy and you need to have an appointment with the Obs downstairs to give you the all clear to go there (you cant go if you have a high risk pregnancy.) They are very encouraging of natural birth however you can have gas and pethidine there if you are really wanting it...if you need an epidural they will transfer you to the birth suites right next door.) You can stay in the birth centre for up to 24 hours after you give birth. The midwives there are awesome!

Good luck with it, I highly recommend the birth centre, I wouldnt go anywhere else now.

I have to see my doctor next week so i will ask her to send the referral through to them.
:fingerscrossed: That i get in now
Just a quick question tho if i dont get into the birth centre will i be able to go to the normal birth suites?
What is the catchment area for main part of the hospital??

That I'm not sure of, I thought it was the Brisbane area but just give them a quick call and see:) Good luck!

You can't actually use the baths in the main birth suite at RBWH (unless of course you got in when nobody was looking and refused to get out ;) )

The RBWH services the north of Brisbane and the Mater the south of Brisbane - if you didn't get into the birth centre you would be encouraged to go to Mater or Logan - good luck with the ballot make sure the GP writes BIRTH CENTRE - wants BIRTH CENTRE CARE all over the referral

I was also wondering about that, I was looking at it on the website yesterday. I don't want to go to Logan Hospital either, I had my daughter at the Mater and it was great. I might get my Dr to do me a referral, I am in SA at the moment but will be in Brisbane by the time I am due.

Unfortunately they are getting stricter about catchment areas as the population increase plus baby boom have put a strain on public health...:(

Hi,

I had my daughter at the Birth Centre 10 weeks ago.
It was a great experience, and really enjoyed it.
The midwifes were wonderful. Who are your midwifes?
