Darling DP popped some flour into a random tupperware container last night...and forgot to label it plain or self-raising. His very helpful solution was to wait to see if my muffins rise
Has anyone else got a better solution for testing what kind of flour it is?
Oh dear. There is probably some terribly clever way. Let's see.....
I just checked the Cook's Companion (I love Stephanie Alexander, this book is like a bible for the kitchen), but she doesn't mention this. Sorry.

Look in the bin for the packaging?

haha I was going to point out the obvious like Martha but if you can't find the packaging bake a cookie and see what happens to it.

ooh can't even do that! wheelie bin man came this morning.
I know there was a packet of SR and plain in the cupboard...both of which are missing. I fear they may even be mixed now  Oh dear...

or mix a bit into some water. If it's sr then the bicarb component will cause a small amount of bubbling.
