 Hi! My DD Alex is 15 months and losing weight. She's on a really poor diet (Dr's are investigating as she has had runny nappies for over 2 months and not sure why so most foods are gone) and I'm worried she's not getting the nutrients and vitamins she needs. Her body is not absorbing anything, hence the reason she's losing weight. But... does anyone know of anything that will help her? She is only eating potato, pumpkin, farex, puree apple and formula. HELP! I'd hate for this to do any permanent damage and dr's arent really worried about that part of the issue at the moment. Maybe theres something she can drink or eat that absorbs into the body itself? I dont know what to do next!!

How would you feel about trying to relactate? :detective: Breastmilk is unique in that it absorbs almost instantly into the body, is gentle on the digestive system and is the perfect all-in-one food for babies under 2 years old.

Relactating is the process whereby you would do certain things in order to bring your milk back in. Even if she wouldn't suckle at the breast, you could express and give it to her in a cup a few times a day. Any amount of breastmilk would be beneficial.
(I know it's nothing the same as what your princess is gonig through, but when i feel myself starting to get sick, bit of a sore throat etc, I express a little and drink it - just a mouthful - and I don't get sick, I feel all better by the end of the day)

I'm not sure if any bubhubbers have relactated but if you do want more info, try www.kellymom.com or call the ABA helpline, they might be able to point you in the right direction. :hugs:

hey
sory your bubs is dealing with weight issues i know it sucks kenz has been dealing with FTT since birth i know how hard it is not to get down on your self about it bnut please dont its just that they are failing to gain failing to thrive is such a nasty diagnosis, not sure if you was getting down about it but thought i would start with that lol

OKay
with the not absorbing yes what queen said about breast milk then yes if you was a success ful bf and are stil wanting to go down that avenue then great, how ever if you are unable or dont want to or what ever, perhaps talk to the dr about a script for neocate it is totaly hydrolised formular and is pre digested souns yuk to say that but its basicly means its brolek down thats all, yes it tastes gross but flavouring is available

also the othrer great thing to try would be a MCT oil or liquidgen again its ascript thing but never the less if weight gain and absorption is an issue than getting a script should be easy the reasonm MCT (medium chain trygliserine is great is becasue it has twice the energy of carbs but is easily digested as it absorbs in the mitochondrial so even kids with really bad absorption can digest it well all kids ut my little mikenzee grrrr

the other thought i had is have the drs ever looked into digestive enzymes they are given to CF kids with malabsorption and can work a treat, my dd is due to start on them when she gets her new tube as the pelets either need to be swalowed whole (they are tiny hide in food or drink ) or can be crushed and fed straight to the intestines onviously the option for kenz, how ever for most kids swallowing them is easy peezy

Good luck

i hope this actualy does post im having trouble with my computedr this is the 3rd time i have written this lol

Hello Lexi

My 17 month old is the same at the moment, she has lots of medical issues though so totally different to your toddler probably. DD had a gastric emptying study which showed slow bowel motility, she also has chronic diahorrea for the past few months but no one really knows why. She was allergic to breat milk too!!!

Would agree with everything Mikenzees mum said!!!! Would totally try Neocate (although it tastes awful so she may not drink it, maybe try Elecare, it's the same type of formula but it tastes better. With doctors advice would only feed her that formula....nothing else at all, they can survive no problems on just that milk, then u will know if it's an intollerance to something she's eating.

Have they tested her for Protein losing entropathy?? (don't know if your at a kids hospital or not) My DD's inital diahorrea was caused by that.

You could give her Pentavite, it's a liquid multivitamin....but ask your doctor first!!!!

The absorption I will leave to Mikenzees mum I've not had alot of experience with that ....YET....LOL

Good luck, there are lots of options that can be used to help her gain weight that doc's haven't tried yet so don't worry there is still hope, most kids can afford to lose some weight and a paed will never let it go on for too long....let us know

Thank you so much Kiwibird27 + mikenzees mum!! I've written that all down and am off to the dr again on thursday. I found these lollies called gummies online. They have all the nutrients and vitamins from fruit and veg (one of each sort) that also have enzymes that have already broken it down so It should be absorbed straight away, so thats got me slightly calmer. But she still has the runny nappies on next to no food so good luck to us hahaha. Im so over drs. DD Alexandra also has heart, breathing, developmental and feeding (actually getting it down there!!) problems, most of which you guys can understand is not very fun. So this feels like another step backwards. Dr on friday threatened DD with 'the tube' (hahaha, like she understands!!) so I'm not too happy. She wasn't breastfed, she was tube fed for her 1st 3 months then learnt to take a bottle (thank god for dummies!!) so the breast feeding idea is sorta out the window. Anyways, thanks so so so much for the ideas and support. I'll let you know how we go!!
:hugs:

Good luck!!! I know the tube sounds horrible but if u do have to get one, it is good piece of mind to know u can back up oral feeding so they get what they need.........let us know!!!!
