My boy is 1 week off being 11 months. He has started to whinge/cry constantly if he's not getting picked up or allowed to play with something he's not supposed to. What is the best way to handle this? It's breaks my heart to see him cry but I want him to stop thinking he will get his own way if he cries.....please help me!!

Hi welcome to bubhub!! :yelclap:
The best thing I found when ds was that age... distraction. Show him something, a toy, a book, whatever!! It's a little frustrating, but if you do keep picking him up he'll become very clingy!! I found distracting him helped & still does to a degree at 2!! :)
Good luck!!
Hi Vanessa
I found my DS started to act like this whilst teething. As soon as they had broken through the skin, he was back to normal - quite happy and definitely not cranky.
Maybe this applies to your son?

All kids are different - but I personally don't think that picking him up will make him more clingy. If he needs you more at the moment, then he needs you more. It's the kids who don't get the attention they need who turn out to be "clingy". Maybe get a sling or a carrier, if you can't carry him in your arms all the time. :)

DD started tantrums nice and early too. You cannot reason with a child under 1 no matter what anyone tells you! Distraction is probably the easiest thing to do for now that won't drive everyone nuts. We now use the ignore tactic, which does tend to drive everyone in the vicinity nuts (although I tend to find it amusing)
Distraction is great - particularly with something that makes noise. When Andrew gets a bit irky I direct him to one of his many noise making toys...a particular favourite is a book that has a button you press that makes a siren sound. He loves it, always makes him laugh even when he's crying IYKWIM.
My brother bought him a Shrek talking plush toy for his 1st birthday and that also works a treat too.....although I do worry that Andrews first sentence is going to be 'I'm an ogre, grab your torch and pitchforks!'
