I have a bit of a disgusting dilemma :o my wheelie bin stinks & no matter how much I clean it & disinfect it when it's emptied. two days later it's as bad as ever. The other problem is maggots  Does anyone know how I can prevent them or get rid of them once they are there ?
Any idea welcome Fresh or otherwise

You can get this really over powering stuff from hardware joints- like bunnings- called PHENYLE- it stinks to high heave but it works wonders on the wheely bins!!

We mix it up- bout a capful to a litre of water and just wash the inside down with a mop- then you can just spray the bin as needed!

When we lived in Darwin we had to buy this thing that hung just inside the bin to keep the flies (and maggots) out. I cant for the life of me remember what it was called, but Bunnings or larger supermarkets may be able to help.

Its called BIN KILL and they are about $7 in Woolies...no more maggots or smell. You still need to disinfect but otherwise no problems:thumbsup: the

We use a high pressure hose to clean ours out. It tends to peel the gooey stuff off. Probably not very helpful though if you don't have one.

this thread has been very helpful to me! Our bin stinks so bad also, it is all the dirty nappies!! We have wheeled it in to the garage so the sun isnt beating down and making it worse, but yuk!!
I am going out to buy some of that stuff you dilute in water and mop!! thank you

Hi Anna14,

I'm not sure where you live, but we live in Brisbane and get a Bin cleaning service once a fortnight called 'Bincare'. My bin's have never been as clean and fresh! After the bin's cleaned by them, it smells like Bubblegum LOL. Apparently whatever they use to clean the bins, kills spiders, maggots, flies, disinfects etc, etc, it's well worth it, maybe you should check if there's a similar company near where you live.
Good luck with it:)

My parents use PHENYLE amd they don't even bother mopping, they just pour a bit in, add some water and tip the bin around so it rinses all the sides down, then tip it out and rinse out with the hose. Their bin never has any bad smells...but that phenyle stuff  I can't get near it, makes me cough.

The only other way to stop stinky bins is to make sure everything that goes in there is in a plastic bag and tied shut so nothing is falling out of it. That should make it a bit less smelly, and also help stop flies/maggots & ants from moving in.

I can't get near the phenyle to clean our bin, and DH is way too lazy to do it, but I just make sure everything is tied up tight and the lid is closed on the bin and ours never smells too bad...unless someone throws takeaway rubish in without a plastic bag

DH cleans our bin by leaving it out on the footpath overnight after it has been emptied...that way it gets aired out and often rained on too.

Uniquey - how much do they charge for that service?

cwsmum - we leave ours out too, but out of laziness. but the neighbours tend to throw their fast food rubbish & other stuff in there!

For the life of me, I can't remember (pregnesia, haha) what it costs. I paid a year's worth in one go, and I think it was $70 or something?? Don't quote me on that, the best thing would be to ring them or email them. They are called 'Bincare'.

Sorry I couldn't help you better!

What a great idea about a bin cleaning service, Im gonna try to get them to come and do mine. They are truly gross and I would rather not clean them myself! Not for the first time round anyway, I dont know what I would catch!

I just checked that Bincare site and it was $30 for 12 weeks (6 cleans) and as a special in March they do it for one whole year for $100.

thanks for the links! :D

i'm just renting now, so i won't bother with them yet (unless the bin gets too stinky from dirty nappies).
but when i get my own home i'll DEFINITELY keep them in mind :D
i'd hate to clean my own bin.... eewwww! :barf:

Hi All - I have to say I have been using OZ Bin Cleaning for nearly 3 years & they are absolutely fantastic. I have 4 kids all under 5 and the bins are kept in the backyard next to their play area. They clean the bins the day the bins are emptied & it costs me less than $2 a week. Their number is 1300 65 11 65. If you tell them you got the number from me I get a free bin clean for every referral. It's Tina from Ashfield

My wheelie bins are so gross. I occassionally hose them out but I think I'll look at a cleaning service now thanks to water restrictions.
