View Full Version : Im excited!!!
Ok, after a discussion with DH, we have decided that the initial outlay for cloth nappies will still be worth it for dd, even though she is 15 mths. I have avoided them for a long time because of oldest ds skin problems, he couldnt wear cloth, but my youngest children have no such problems and the quality of cloth nappies have improved so much since he was a baby. Anyway, I now have some questions for you experienced cloth nappy mums.
What brands are the best? what do I look for in a good cloth nappy? what ones are the best for night time? are there any other things i will need to buy? how many will i need?
thankyou in advance!!

tots bots are great - the best have tried, and i have tried heaps!
Ebay is the best place to buy nappies
Welcome to another addiction!!:yelclap:
you will need about 12-15 nappies so that you only need to wash every couple of days, and if you use tots bots you will need about 5 covers.
I fins that works great for me.
Another clothie...YAY!:smiliedance:
BTW I rec my green nappie and it dosen't really suit the weather up here so if anyone wants to take it for the same price I won ebay plus the same postage PM me....It has not been used as yet but has had a wash.
GREAT NEWS! Congratulations on making the decision to go cloth. You will love it.
I have to say, I don't think Ebay is the best place to buy cloth at all. It used to be about 2 years ago, but now all the wonderful WAHMs have their own beautiful websites and most nappies are sold that way, direct from them. A good place for reviews is:
www.nappycino.com
and a good place for nappy chatter is www.ozclothnappies.org.
there are lots of nappies out there, and the research could take you another 4 months to make decisions. The main thing at the moment is to decide what type of nappy system you would like to use or try: pockets, all in ones, fitted + cover? this might be influenced a bit by the weather where you live too. Once you make that decision, it will help narrow down the decision making for you. Somewhere like Nappycino you will be able to find the places where great ones are sold from.
Another way to do your research before buying is go to a gettogether near where you live. If you are in Melbourne there is one coming up next week, but if you are in another state, join in at one of the above websites and someone will direct you to one. The meets are great because you get to see and hear about all sorts of different nappies before buying them.
another option, if you are in adelaide, is to go to www.naturescradle.com.au where they have an online store to compliment their real life store... they also have product demonstrators.
Finally, several of the nappy brands out there are demonstrated by consultants in various states, inc. QLD, VIC, SA, NSW, ACT and WA. Have a look at www.babybeehinds.com.au & www.bubbaj.com.au to start with. I think fuzzibunz do them as well. And these consultants regularly hold stalls at markets and do private demos/parties.
So a few options there, let me know by pm if you want any more info...! Good luck!
Thankyou so much for your help guys!
Mor, will check out those websites, thanks again :)

Hi E,
Try doing asearch here in BH, there have been many great threads on cloth nappies lately.
My best pick for a night nappy would have to be a Very Baby Simple Night, you can get them from http://www.ericanappies.com.au/store/index.php?main_page=index
or
http://www.theweewuns.au.com/store/
Also I use and love my hemp honey from http://www.babybeehinds.com.au
I use mainly pockets but have started to move into AIO (All In Ones) and fitted nappies.
With pockets you need to boost them. Which means you stuff the pocket part with absorbant material. The best to use is hemp prefolds or microfibre. You can get a packet of 3 microfibre cloths at Big W fro about $3.60. They are in teh cleaning section and yes they are the onces you can clean with, great for dusting . I use a combination of hemp and microfibre and boost according to Harry's needs. If we are going out I boost a little bit more, by adding an extra microfibre than I would when at home.
I love my pockets from http://www.greenkids.com.au/
or from Sandra at http://www.sandrasstuffables.com.au/index.php
I'm on nappycino but pm me and I'll let you know my username.
I agree with Mor that the best thing you can do is see and feel cloth nappies irl. We started using when Harry was just about 1 and he's now nearly 2 so we have had great wear out of our naps. Some of my originals are still going great.
Good luck with your research and if you need anymore help just pm me. Welcom to the addication Hun :hugs:!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry but I stand by saying ebay is the best as you can save so much money if you, like me don't have $25-$30 per nappy to spend.
I support wahm's where I can, but they are sometimes very expensive.
But hey, thats just me:)

Um...... exsqueeze me??.... you are forming nappy-buying syndicates without MOI?! :shame:
Well, since I just transferred another $300 to various nappy sellers today I probably didn't need to be included in this purchase so I will let you off this time.
Erin, if we can catch up (bummer that I can't come tomorrow!!) I can show you some that I have bought.

Good on you Erin for trying cloth
I need to warn you though...it can become very addictive :devil6: I spent so much on cloth that DH said we probably have to TTC for bub #2 NOW to make most of the nappies...DD is 5 months old if you must know...

Personally I use mostly terry flats, since they're heaps cheaper than fitteds (I don't really think they're harder to use) but I do like fitteds for going under small clothes and going out. A hemp booster in a terry square makes it last much longer too. :)

Tea Lady have you tried using the Eenee's with the terry flats?????

Good on you Erin for the environmental change! :yelclap:
I did it when Ethan was 6weeks old till he was about 7mths old (when I was pregnant with #2).
I still used disposables at night though (I know - cheating:shame: ). So I gather you are all set up with your buckets for soaking, I just remember how heavy they (the buckets) became - every time I washed them DH had to lift them into the washing machine for me!
Another tip (sorry if it is a repeat, but I haven't read this entire thread) - make sure you remove all stains (with sards soap etc) before soaking as some of those #2's really get set in
Goodluck! :)
oh no Ness... there's no soaking anymore. At least I don't think anyone does. It's all dry-pailing!
Has anyone weighed up costs of disposable v's cloth
I can currently get disposables for 23cents each.

Yes we have looked into the costs of using cloth. :banghead:
But thats not the only reason most of us choose cloth. The enviromental impact of disposable nappies is huge and thats why I use cloth. :)

Go for Greenkids they are great :D
Im finally getting my next lot this week as we had a delay due to the re-opening so ive gotten a freebie yayay :yelclap: So all i can say is not only are they great nappies but the customer service is A one :smiliedance:
RB- Try Greenkids otherwise there is a SAHM on ebay that goes by leosipos that makes pocket nappies as well as hemp inserts & we have had no dramas with the inserts infact i think they are great so if you can win them cheap go for it ! The nappies arent as "nice" as say the Greens but they still do a good job they just feel a little more plasticy if thats the best way to put it.
Breeannasmum - The initial outlay hurts if you go for the likes of the modern nappy like the pockets etc but overall you end up saving we have other threads that show the costs & savings :D

I can currently get disposables for 23cents each.
Well considering cloth nappies can be used on more than one child, I am thinking well I could get the price down to maybe a negative number! lol
Nah seriously I bought say for eg an Eenee nappy for $6 I use it 3 times per week and say I use it for the next 12 months, that is using the nappy 156 times, that isn't including the times i used it last year.
So to buy that nappy I am paying $0.038461538 etc etc cents per use and that is only with one child, so I could reuse this nappy on say 2 more children! So I guess cloth are cheaper than disposbles by a long shot!:D
Sorry to hijack the thread, but where do i get hemp boosters from?
RB you can get them from Babybeehinds (www.babybeehinds.com.au) for about $4 or $5 each but I'm pretty sure you can get them cheaper elsewhere, ie. most nappy sites have them I think.
Otherwise, I'd recommend you just buy the hemp from www.nappiescovered.com.au and do the folding and edging yourself (cheapest option) or you might be able to sweet-talk Jodie (who runs nappiescovered) into making them for you. She made some for me for about $2.50 each. Cute colours too! :D
