Does your child use a quilt?

If yes, when did they start?

Do you make up your child's cot with the sheets and blankets at the foot of the cot or at the head?

I'm trying to work out the best way to keep Harry warm at night. Last night he woke up 4 times, some may not think this is so bad but for Harry it is very unusually. Each time I had to get up, place him back under the blankets and pat him a little until he went back to sleep. Each time I went in he was up the head end of the cot. I still make his bed with the blankets and sheets at the foot of the cot. I also dress him in Bonds full length jumpsuits to keep him warm.
Is it time to start making his cot like I do with a normal bed, that is, the bed clothes up at the head of the bed. Also can I start putting a quilt on him instead of two blankets like I do now?
I know the risks of SIDS is far less now that he is 1 so is it okay for me to change now.
I tried a sleeping bag with him last year and he hated it. When it gets really cold I have heater in his room that I put on very low, but I don't think it's that cold.

TIA for your help everyone.

In my opinion the best and safest way to keep your baby warm at night is a sleeping bag. They can't kick them off nor can the cover their heads. My son was always kicking off his blankets and waking himself up, the minute he went into his sleeping bag he slept through the night. You don't need anything really thick or padded I just had a cheap one from K-Mart which I put on over his pj's.

I started putting a light quilt on my dd's bed when she was 16 months old. I would have put it on at 12 months only it was summer!! I always made her cot from the foot of it to the length of her shoulders (plus a couple of inches to allow for her to be under the bedding). From 9 months I always left one side of her blankets untucked so she could get throw the blankets off if she wanted to. She would only wriggle out of the blankets if she was hot, if it was a cool/cold night she would snuggle in quite happily. She went into a "big" bed at 20 months and I have always made that as I would a normal bed and she has had no problems.

Good Luck.

Hey Karena

Aidan had a quilt from around 12 months, and it was the only thing he would stay under! I think I made the cot up as per normal too, i.e. not just at the foot. Why do you think Harry hated sleeping bags? Maybe try again and see how he goes? And you mentioned that you didn't hink it was cool enough to turn on the heater - maybe Harry does, hence the waking! Good luck, call me if you need to.

Thanks everyone,
I have pulled out a sleeping bag that I was given and if things don't improve I will try again. I think the night waking is a combination of teething, has a troublesome top tooth that is moving but is refusing to break through and he's getting my cold. All this combined I think could be the problem. He was up 4 times again last night. I don't think it's colder enough yet for a heater as Harry is usually a "hot" baby and the past few nights it's only been at 17 at night.
I think I will try the doona tonight and see how that goes. Yesterday I made the bed up at the head of the bed and when I checked on him before going to bed myself he was still under the blankets, during the night when I got up to him, he had thrown the blankets off and was half asleep in the middle of the bed.
I'm going to give him a few nights with the doona and see how he goes. I might also let him get over the cold and if things haven't improved I'll try to sleeping bag again.
Thanks again everyone.
