Today mum changed Julius, it was wet, she didnt wipe, she was about to put another nappy on him so I reminded her to wipe. She said she never wipes if it is a wet nappy.I always do...I dont know why.I guess I just thought it would be refreshing.
Well it got me thinking, what do you do?
Yep - everytime- no nappy rash ever on either of my kids - wee is so acidic that it's not just refreshing, but essential for their skin (especially since my son - now out of nappies - has eczema)

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't... if it looks dry I leave it as I don't want to be wetting her unneccesarily. Never had nappy rash.

I used too ALWAYS with my 1st 2, but with DS2 not always. I def do in the morning cause he's usually pretty wet then but if its just wee's and he's not 'wet' then nah I don't. And same here, he's never had a nappy rash.

I do but have occasionally not. I was horrified when chn told me NOT to wipe every change as I used a barrier:eek: Now I am ok about it. Not for every change but ocasionally (once a week).
My children have had thrush due to penicillan at birth and when I got a pack of different nappies. That was the only time
The same chn told me that wee and poo together sets off an amonia like reaction which causes nappy rash not just wee:)

the only time I don't is when I take off their nappies for a bath;) DS seems to get pretty stinky in that area, I'm just not used to boy parts:o girls are so much easier;)
DD got a rash after staying with my parents for a few days, I soon found out why when watching my mum change her, she was wiping from back to front:(

Not usually. We have been fine in regards to nappy rash. Usually nappy rash comes with the runs or a reaction to a type of food for us.
If they are VERY wet I wipe.

Yep I do
Otherwise he gets horrible sore nappy rash

Only if their skin looks visibly wet. I think having an unnecessary cold wipe on the bum is pointless if the skin is dry. We shower/bath every day, though. Elimination communication is good for this though, they don't have so sit in their wee or poo, it just leaves the body straight away.

Yep I do (using cloth wipes and a solution) to prevent nappy rash, bacteria infections and yucky smells.

Nope, not everytime...specially in the cold weather!
Yes I do most of the time. I wipe with a wet cloth and then pat dry with a dry cloth. Sometimes though she chucks a big wobbly when getting her nappy changed and if it's just a wee then I just put the nappy on quickly.

Mostly..... but not always. Never at her night change at 10.30pm otherwise it wakes her up too much!
I'm finding I do do it pretty much every change now that she's in cloth, I find her skin is still quite damp.
She has never had Nappy rash.

Yep I do everytime. Its a habit now of getting a wipe out with a nappy at the beginning of each change.
I have always thought that wee could burn your skin. I may just be an idiot! But thats why I always wipe.

i wipe my baby every nappy change, regardless of what she has done. I figure if it's the standard of hygiene for adults, why not bubs as well.
we use a velour flannel, wet under the tap, so i feel ok about cleaning her with that. If it was the supermarket wipes, i would feel differently, as she reacts to whatever is in those.
i guess this topic, like so many other things to do with parenting, is a personal one, we make our choices based on what we feel is right for our family.
I used to get really upset when a child i knew, would come home from kindy, being wiped by adult carers from back to front (wrong way around) and she would get thrush as a result. I wasn't allowed to say anything cos i wasn't the parent, but it made me so cross (this kid would come to me and cry about the pain she was in).

oh that's so sad. I'd think that would be common knowlegde, at least for female carers but I guess not everyone knows these things.. Did the little girls parents say anything to them?

I do it everytime. But my mother has, on the odd occasion, not wiped after changing DD's nappy. I just assumed it was the "cleaner" thing to do.

the father did (kindy ignored him)
the mother wouldn't, she denied the thrush was even happening and told the kid "you're saying this to get attention".
the kindy was not interested cos the mother didn't believe the daughter.
the parents were divorced at the time.
poor little kid was itchy and uncomfortable most of the time (and a bit smelly) which was totally not her fault. i cannot believe the mum could be so callous to her daughter. it made me terribly upset, felt so powerless.

I don't think wiping back to front actually does cause thrush,. It does cause another infection but I think the mum is right that it wouldn't have been causing thrush. Can I ask how you knew that they were wiping incorrectly?

i agree with pegasus.....wee can burn....it must be wiped off at every change.

It depends on how wet the nappy is. Sometimes I left DS play for a few minutes without a nappy to dry him out that way instead...

kid had a white milky discharge on her knickers and was itchy. She had poo in her knickers when we collected her from kindy. because of her "challenges" she could not wipe herself any other way, than the reverse of what is advised. it's complicated and if i put any more details, - it's just too complicated. Developmentally, other kids her age WOULD be encouraged to self toilet, but she was just not capable of doing it. Too hard to explain properly online.
Once again, difference of opinion btwn mum and dad. Mum said "kid can wipe herself". Dad and OT and physio said "no she can't wipe herself due to her particular disability".
she still can't reach behind her own body - years later).

You don't need to explain yourself I just didn't think that you could get thrush from that due to it being fungal. :)
My dd still I catch her wiping back to front and she does get a tiny bit red so we just use barrier and it helps ease it! DD has been toilet trained for just over 2 yrs!!
Our Little Tresures - I think you are right there, thrush is caused by a yeast infection, which I have never heard of anyone catching from fecal matter.
Of course, wiping back to front can cause other infections, so is NOT a good idea anyway.

QUOTE:
Yeast (candida) is a fungus that occurs naturally in the vagina, mouth, digestive system and other parts of the body. Symptoms only appear with over growth. Yeast growth is normally kept under control by the friendly bacteria in your body. However, if the balance of bacteria is upset and the yeast cells are allowed to overproduce, a yeast infection (candidiasis) can occur.

I wipe each change. Just because your child is 'only' wet doesn't mean there aren't acids and enzymes present that could cause irritation.

I never wipe if it's just a wee, only poo and he has never suffered from nappy rash and I use half the amount of wipes.

Archie has always been prone to nappy rash, can't ever remember him going a whole week without at least a mild case of nappy rash and i have tried everything to prevent it, trust me!
I definately do wipe after each nappy no matter how wet or dry he is, i figure wee on the skin just can't be comfortable. I was a bedwetter until i was 14 and i used to get 'nappy rash' from just wee so i know that it can be very uncomfortable to have wee on the skin.
It must depend on the baby though, if your baby is lucky enough to rarely or never have nappy rash then not wiping after a wee probably isn't gonna effect them much.
No I don't.
not for wees. The boys have never had nappy rash. (except for when we were using Huggies products  or they had the runs)
Gabriel's never had nappy rash, not even a red bum. :D

The answer is here (in bold)...
The action of wiping back-to-front can't actually in-and-of itself cause thrush - but it can upset the natural bacterial balance present in the vagina and surrounding labia - and this can allow candida to flourish.
Therefore, no, I suppose technically its not CAUSING thrush - but its allowing it to develop in an otherwise-avoidable way.
HTH :)
if its only a wee i wipe with a wet washer bub if its a poo i use baby wipes
(DP uses the hose out the back  )Just joking
