View Full Version : refusing to take bottle when I go out
Help! My 4 month old BF baby will not take milk from a bottle or a cup. I have tried at different times of the day, I have tried getting DH to give her the bottle and it always ends up in a screaming match. This is making my life quite difficult as it means I can't leave her with anyone for longer than a few hours.
Help! :banghead:

bingo I was in exactly the same situation as you, but unfortunately I don't have any answers - she never took a bottle  I know how frustrating it is, but I found it got a bit better once she was older and had fewer feeds. Keep persisting though if you think theres' any chance it will work - I wish it had worked for us! Good luck!! :)

Have you tried different brands of teats? Many people who have had problems seem to swear by the Pigeon peristaltic teat.
I use Avent teats, and have not had any problems getting DS to take EBM via those, but other people have.
I'd also check the rate of flow of the teat, too. I had Avent single hole teats when I was going out for the evening. They came with the bottles. Not ever having been a bottle feeder, I wasn't really aware that they come in different flow rates until I discovered that I had a 2 hole teat as well. I figure that when my milk lets down, it flows quite fast, so the 2 holed teat seemed like a better idea, as I didn't want him getting frustrated if the flow was too slow.
yes i know how u feel. i have 3 month old who doesnt like the bottle. she will have "some" of it now. has finally come around to taking some, but its all in "the hold" which my DF is yet to master.. getting much better i must add.
she also doesnt like the dummy.. ive tried using different types. guess some bubs just dont like it bottles and dummies etc..
good luck, i really hope she comes around for you. it sure does make life a little easier, you need to be able to have someone else give u a break.
:p
thanks everyone. Hill baby I will give this a try but finding a willing "holder" is going to be a challange. My Mum has tried the holding firmly and insisting but Maddi usually ends up with milk all over her face. She is soooo determined.
I've also tried different teats, 3 types now. It's cost me a fair bit as I've also had to buy different bottles to fit the teats. I've also tried her drinking out of a sipper cup. Oh boy am I having fun. At the moment I'm trying it out once a day as I'm hoping one day she'll get the message.
I have the same problem. DD is almost 6 months and I have tried on several different occassions over the past few months with no success. Different teats, different people (me, husband, mum etc), different times (hungry, mid feed, end of feed) and no luck. She doesn't understand how to suck the teat and just pushes it around with her tongue.
I have just started on solids which is going well so I am wondering whether that sometimes helps???
I have also heard that a cup may be the alternative if she won't take a bottle. Does anyone have any reports on how they have gone with cup feeding eg: what age, what sort of cup, method.
Would still like to use a bottle but if not, will use a cup.

the hardest part is not giving in she is a smart baby and knows if she carries on she'll get her way I understand cause I have been there make sure you wrap her tight so she cant knock the bottle away have the lights dim and maybe some calm music she'll give in eventually , I hated doing it cause I felt bad for my baby boy But it had to be done good luck let me know how you go

Hey Bingo,
No help here, I am in the same situation at 7 1/2 months - but I have given up trying LOL:laughing: . Hillbaby's advice sounds good, perhaps it will take more than one go though? I did read somewhere too, that when you finally do get them to take a bottle, you have to then keep giving them a bottle regularly, otherwise they will forget. So they way I understand it, one success does not mean you have conquered:banghead: .
Anyway, good luck, hope you fare better than I  .
I've tried Maddi out on the Avent sipper cup. She tends to chew on it though and thinks its a big game. But I am finding that she is drinking a little bit at least. I've been trying at least once a day with the bottle and I think each day she's drinking more and more out of the bottle so maybe persistence is going to pay off. But it's always a battle:banghead: . I am finding that she will pull off the bottle if there is any sort of distraction so have made a real effort to have a peaceful environment.
Hillbaby5, I wrote to Avent via their website and they sent me a free Sipper thing to try out on my avent bottle. So far it's having a small amount of success but nothing I would write home about.
