Hi guys - as mentioned I am starting this thread to discuss general options, not to debate them etc - (please feel free to start related threads) but hopefully to list information that we have been given about birthing options sort of fact/reference style.

I'm going to start with some of the ones that I am familiar with (particularly some that are a bit different to 'the norm' )

I am in a bit of a rush now but will elaborate on these later

DOULAS - term of a person who accompanies you prior to, during and sometimes following the birth. One of the biggest benefits for a Doula is that she will make sure your birth plan is followed unless really necessary to do otherwise, she will help you to relax, she will be brilliant support. Cost of doulas may vary - they often have a midwifery background

BIRTH CENTRE - a bit different to a hospital is midwifery run, usually with set midwives that you see through the pregnancy. Even if you are not going to a birth centre they may be able to provide you with excellent birth info and resources.

LOTUS BIRTHING - where you keep the placenta attached until it falls off of its own accord, not the norm - extremely passive - based on the idea that you do not cut the cord at all when it is ready it will come away

INJECTION to birth the placenta (proper term illudes me at the moment) - Many midwives or obs will push you to have this injection - You do not HAVE to have it - from what I understand it is quite safe (they will say there is a risk of hemmorage) to wait for up to an hour for third stage labour (for the placenta to birth naturally)

Hmmm - I know there is heaps more I want to add but I am really short of time exactly now - so I will come back and add more later - Feel free to add stuff - Hope this helps (especially first timers!)

Love Jess
