View Full Version : Sleeping too much!
Hi there,
My DS is 10 weeks corrected age,
He would normally wake every 4 hours or so to feed, be awake more in the day and sleep a bit longer at night.
I am worried though as last night he slept from 11.30pm through to 6.30am. He had a big feed when he woke up but today he has pretty much slept all day and only been awake for about 1 hour total including feeds. He has refused feeds since 9am this morning approx.
Is it normal for babies to do this at this age.
He does have relux and reduce lung capacity but these seemed to be fairly under control. He is very content when he does wake smiling etc.
Any advice is appreaciated as I am starting to get very worried.

Some babies do this after a growth spurt, and he would be about the right age for that. My niece has always done this - has a few days of growth spurt-age, and then sleeps for like 18 hours a day for a couple of days. My advice to you would be to sleep when he sleeps, so you catch up :)
Actually - I just read your post again - you say he's refusing feeds, so has he had any since 9am? He might be a little sick, sore throat or bit of a cold.
Is he having wet nappies today? How's his fontanelle?
He has had a few wet nappies today and drank heaps of milk between 6.30am and 9am almost 250ml but has had hardly any since then. He is only 4.7kg though so I would have thought his tummy would be to small to go this long IYKWIM.

If you have any doubts the best thing would be to take him to your GP for a check up.
From my experience babies do have very sleepy days regually when they have growth spurts but I dont think they usually go off their food at the same time
I hope your baby starts feeding for you soon...
My paed told me that it's normal for young bubs to have a gap of 6 - 8 hours between feeds and it doesn't have to be overnight. I know when Josh's reflux got treated he slept most of the day and night for a week or more and cut back heaps on his feeds. BUT, I don't think he went for over 8 hours between feeds twice in a 24 hour period.
I'm sure you have a paed for your bub. They won't mind a call if you are still worried. It's probably a growth spurt, but it doesn't hurt to get checked out.
Hi, you said bub is 10 weeks corrected age how prem was he? Mine was 7 weeks prem and I found he slept alot and after just 8 weeks home he was sleeping through the night and has only been on 4 bottles a day since around 12 weeks. I would sometimes worry but I was told prems do sleep alot more however if you are really worried then just get him checked out it's better to have peace of mind.
Thankyou Ladies for all you replies,
Fozzie DS was 10 weeks premature and he has always been a sleepy bub but never this much, I called his paed today and he advised that it could be a combination of his reflux meds kicking in and a growth spurt. He is not concerned as long as he is having his minimum fluid quota in 24 hours and at least 6 wet nappies, which he is. He said to just make the most of him sleeping alot lol.
Looks like I was being a bit of a worrywart over nothing!

Dont worry, DD did this for a few days a while back and I was a bit worried, but she was just growing!!! :)
I'm glad your paed isn't worried. It's always reassuring when someone else tells you not to worry isn't it? Now, you can enjoy the sleep!
