View Full Version : Cutting hair while pregnant
Does anyone know if it is 100% safe for baby's health to have haircuts during pregnancy? I've heard some conflicting opinions and just want to make sure. Thanks in advance.
As far as I knew it was safe to have haircut's while pregnant. I did it through both my pregnancies. Hair colouring is a different story but I did that too. Both my children are very happy and healthy!

There would be no way that cutting your hair while pregnant could be a problem. Hair is dead as soon as it leaves your scalp, therefore whether it is cut off or not makes no difference at all.
The only way I have heard that it is bad o cut your hair whilst pregnant would be if you are making a rash decision to have a drastic radical new hairdo on an emotional whim ... as it might be something that you could regret later. I think we are more emotional and insecure about our appearances while pregnant particuarly as we have little control over our bodies. If you get the urge to cut your hair into an elfin crop, make sure that it is something that you can deal with for months afterwards:ecomcity:

Cutting hair is fine and so is colouring the baby is so well protected and hair colour doesnt get into the blood stream if you are having your hair bleach make sure there is good ventilation

As far as I know both cutting and colouring your hair is safe to do in pregnancy. If you do colour though make sure it is well ventilated and also some (me) pregnant women when colouring their hair the colour will not stick!

I dont understand why you'd think getting your hair cut could have anything to do with your unborn baby, If getting your hair cut hurt your baby, then washing it would (unwashed hair for 40 weeks yuk!!!) I think someone has been telling you silly lies!!!!:p

My exact thoughts!
I read this thread and thought.....WTH?????
I was laughing so hard I nearly wet myself:laughing:
I am sorry, some people have no brain! Really, why would it hurt your baby....THINK about it!! It's hair!
GEEEEEZ are you serious?
I have been hairdressing for a long time and I have never heard of this little ripper!
Cutting is absolutely fine as is colouring, the reason it is advised against is the colour may not take as the hair stores residues...ie significant hormonal changes affects hair as does medication. It does not leak under the scalp:eek: but ensure good ventilation. If hair colouring and cutting causes the problems 'they' say then I shouldn't have worked whilst pregnant...go figure:banghead:

It is perfectly safe to have your hair cut whilst being pregnant! How could it possibly affect the baby??
Even colours are fairly safe - provided you dont get them done all the time and you are sitting in a well ventilated area of the salon.
And Im with you JenNT - Im a hairdresser too and (although Ive heard some beauties!) this one takes the cake!!

Maybe cutting hair whilst pg is one of those old wives tales! I was sooo superstitious when I was pg that I had heard that feet massages could bring on a miscarriage so for my whole pregnancy I refused foot massages!:p I know I am silly!

Sorry to laugh, but I'm with the rest of the hairdressers here!! That certainly is a corker!!!! So if it's bad to cut your hair then it must be bad to trim your toe nails too... :p ;) ( just having some fun!!)
Oh sweet, this is too funny.
You ARE joking right?
I suggest you read quite a few books.
BWAHHHAHHHAHAH :smiliedance:

Good on you for asking Olivia.... considering some of the responses...
It's all superstition.
I found this info:
It is better not to cut hair during pregnancy.
This is one of the most widespread superstition. Some women quite seriously declare that for "pregnant it is harmful". But from the medicine point of view, there is no any harm that hairstyle can cause in health of the pregnant woman and her future child. During pregnancy hormones positively influence growth and structure of hair. Therefore hair become strong, rich, silky. Many women mark, that quality of their hairdress was considerably improved. However if the woman carries a short hairstyle, the interdiction on visiting of a hairdressing saloon within nine months can become for her a serious problem. In what put? On national superstitions, "to cut hair - means make shorter life of your future child ". Sounds beautifully, but it is hardly to find whether here can be any interrelation. Nevertheless, many trust in this nonsense. One woman mentioned, that in interior she was refused to make a hairstyle, and they offered her to come after sorts.
Hair cutting is definately fine to do.
Crikeys HL where did you find that?
That is the most oddly written thing I've ever seen...well not quite, but you know what I mean. Sounds translated IYKWIM?
Yes Nicole I translated it from Czech to English, you know with the 50 or so languages I speak.
No I think it is actually a wider known superstition from overseas and probably has been translated. I have also heard it's bad luck to cut your hair on your wedding day, or does everyone know that one? My DH cut his on our wedding day and we are both still kicking.:)
P.S Don't question my 'research' woman!:p
Sorry oh wise one...:hugs:
Wonder what 'bad luck' means actually. Bad luck you won't stay married, or bad luck you will?

OK, this is an odd thread, funny and everything BUT....
During pregnancy your hair is so lush and beautiful!!! Why would you consider cutting it when it all falls out three months after bubs is born???
So for me, I probably wouldn't consider cutting my hair while pregnant!:D
Sorry oh wise one...:hugs:

PMSL not bad Nicole ;)
Thanks for all your replies, ladies. The opinions that I have heard were mainly "old wives tales" and superstitious ideas (including the one that Happy Lady was referring to). But I thought I’d post the question on the forum anyway... Sorry for causing so much controversy… At least this has given you some laughs and entertainment!
Good on you Olivia!
Made for interesting reading.

There are some indigenous cultures that don't believe in cutting hair whilst pregnant. Don't know if it's a superstitious thing or maybe cultural.

I haven't heard that cutting hair can be bad but if you make a rash descion you could regret it so just make sure its something you want not a hormonal emotional one. I never coloured my hair during preg as there is so much conflicting information so i chose not to.
