Taking penicillum while pregnant

Hi everyone, I am wondering if anybody can share their experience on taking penicillium during pregnancy. I am 20 wks and have had a very persistent thrush since early weeks. I've tried Canisten but that didn't work. My OB has now prescribed a 5-days course of penicillium. He said it's very safe but I am still a bit concerned as, firstly, I've never heard of thrush being treated by antibiotics and, secondly, some info on the Internet says that penicillium is not recommended for pregnant. Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this.

I had penicilllan quite often in my first pregnancy because i kept getting UTI's(urinary tract infection) and my daughter turned out fine.

Im actually on penicillan right now because i have a UTI but id rather have it than not because the outcome of not having medication can end up being worse.

Hello! I had penicillin through my pregnancy because of UTI's too. It's a category A drug so it's relatively safe.

But yeh I agree with your thoughts. Penicillin causes thrush so I'm not sure why you are taking them? :confused: I would definitely get a second opinion asap!

Hi i agree with getting a second opinion. I did microbiology last semester as a part of my nursing course and Thrush cannot be treated with penicillian because it is a fungus not a bacteria. And as was said before antibiotics tend to cause thrush in alot of people, maybe you should ring your dr again and ask what the penicillian is for exactly and tell him you have researching it and found that it doesn't work on thrush, just some advice thought you may not know that already hope it gets better soon:) :fingerscrossed:

Thanks for your replies. I spoke to my OB again and apparently he has prescribed penicillium because I have strep B. But what I can't understand is why prescribing it half-way through pregnancy when I will need to be treated just before the birth anyway... I'll be definitely getting a 2nd opinion. It's comforting to know that penicillium is safe though... The chemist I spoke to yesterday confirmed that.
