Is it true that Magic Mountain is gone, and there are multi-million dollar mansions there now, and you cant walk around there in bathers???????

I was told this by some people I was talking to at Indy....

I use to love that place, catching the train then tram.....

I did leave in 1995/96 so it has been a while, but is it really gone...:crying: So many childhood memories!!!!

Magic Mountain is gone, there is a new games/play place thing there. I haven't been, but my friend took my daughter there and the carousel is still there. The Beach House, I think it's called.
There are lots of high-rise luxury apartments, and it certainly doesn't look like it did in the mid-90's... I lived in the area around that time too, and going there now is a bit weird. BUT the end of jetty rd, is FANTASTIC now, it's a big huge paved area, with heaps and heaps more cafe's and eateries and just benches and tree's, it's very cool. People still walk around in bathers :D

Oh and the big huge jetty, is that gone too?????

Thesse people said that it was a local law that you cant wear bathers in the area unless on the beach, and that most of the beach was now private anyways!!!!

Really saddened me to think that that is what is has become!!!

Oh I wold love to go back and see, but like you said it would be really weird!

I know things have to change but Magic Mountain.... - tragic so very tragic.....lol...I'm a bit of a sook!

Oh no, no no no no, the jetty is still there.

it has definitely changed, a lot, in fact when I drive up towards glenelg I do not recognise it. And I can't find my way around anymore, just by sight, I need a street directory because I don't recognise any of the buildings.

I dunno about the private beach bit - could very well be true, but I saw girls wearing bikini tops on jetty road, and blokes just in board shorts, so I don't know about the bathers thing - I have seen people wear them but maybe it is "discouraged" or whatever.

I saw a docco on the Beaumont Children recently, and they showed old footage of the search that was done right after they went missing - glenelg looked just like a little seaside town, grass everywhere, it was beautiful. How times change. I don't know how they can keep developing the area without completely ruining the beach though :(

Yeah I watched that too.... It was a beautiful little quiet place..... I loved the tram ride there!

Money means more than the environment, which is sad. I hope they dont keep developing it...

Its funny before I heard of the tradgedy of Magic Mountain being knocked down, I had these plans to one day take DS! Go back and show him where mummy grew up and the places I visited as a kid!!!!

Now I wouldnt be able to! Which saddens me in a way..make sme wish I never left in a way (not that I had much choice).....

We dont even have photos, just memories!!

Is the tram still running????? - sorry bout all these questions, but am sooo curious!!!

the tram is still running, but (prepare yourself...) they aren't the same old trams, they're new ones, like the melbourne trams. they look kinda like the trains. It's awful :( and there's less room on them, and there's no leather straps to hang on to when you're standing. It's really sad. I loved jumping on the tram after school and rumbling down to the bay on a friday night.

OMG I am shattered.....that is not right, so not right...OMG OMG OMG....WHYYYYY????????

One of the best thing about the tram ride was the history in it, the history of the area, the trams themselves......oh my!

damn those multi-million dollar house/unit owners....upgrades for the high society!!!!!

I am feeling sadder by the minute......

My son will have nothing to experience in the future soon (in regards to my past)!!!!

Have all the train stations been modernised too, or do they still have the history behind them, the old style ones at Glenelg and smaller suburb stations????

Well, the trains are all breaking down and doors flying open during travel and derailments happening - the trains do need upgrading but it won't happen, whereas the trams were pretty much perfect and they got upgraded up the wazoo!! Crazy.

I think that they bring out the old trams on public holidays or for special ocassions, but you're right, the history of the whole everything was fantastic, and in a short amount of time they've ruined everything :(

OMG I have heard nothing like that about the trains..... I do remember coming to QLD and was like OMG these trains are so smick, so fancy with push button opening, much cleaner etc.... But trains and buses dont coincide like the did in SA, and to go 2 suburbs away it is like $2.70 which is what the price of an all day ticket use to be in SA for bus, tram, train....

Life would be so different living there now!

How can they ruin such a historical place....

I have nothing to show my son of my past, which I am really sad about, I just cant believe it!! I am in shock!

thanks for all the info the_queen!

Personally I like the new trams coz they have cushions on the seats n dont jolt u 2 much. they r also more disabled friendly. the single trip tickets for an adult now r $4.10! that's ridiculous! I havent been to the beachouse yet but part of the appeal of magic mountain was the shape of it sparked my imagination.
