Watching Oprah today, Dr Oz said that being circumcised is cleaner and risk of passing STDs is less then if you weren't circumcised.
I thought that was just a myth and it was just as safe not being circumcised.

Can anyone clarify as Im a little confused?

He is Jewish, so perhaps his opinion is skewed.

It certainly is a myth. The risk of passing STD's descreases to almost zero if a condom is used.
Being circumcised may be cleaner in terms of smegma buildup, but if this is the main reason for circumcising then we should also be circumcising our daughters, as the female genitals have many many more folds of skin. If you're uncircumcised, then having a daily bath or shower gives you clean genitals. No need to slice anything off ;)

Dr. Oz is a Turkish-American heart surgeon.

He's not a urologist or pediatrician.

I wouldn't believe anything that "Dr" says, he comes across to me as a "typical" over the top American to me, like he belongs on a soap or something, Nip and tuck perhaps?

I watched some of the artical. I was in hysterics when that guy accidently bursted the um yeah if you watched it ykwim  . I thought it was very informative. Men tend to forgot about thier health so as a wife and a Mother I shall be urging my boys to have regular checks ( now I know more).

Bout the circ part there was an artical about it.

OK found it...have a read. Theres 2 pages.

Oprah has had a woman on her show several times who advertises anti-aging cream made from foreskins.

Foreskins stolen from newborns is a multi-million dollar business in the US.

Dr Oz is from a land where butchers sometimes do circs (Turkey).

yes really

I didn't watch the video, probably not a good idea.

He seems pretty clueless about the normal penis.

The reason I asked was bc my SIL watched the episode and wants to get her 14 mth old DS circumcised now bc of what 'Dr' Oz said.....

I told her not to believe everything he said and to research it first more thoroughly but bc he said less risk of passing STDs and bc its cleaner she is convinced.

Thanks btw for the info ladies.

It was a great episode, shame you missed it. There was heaps of info on male health.

I think it's a silly move for someone to commit to such a drastic change just because someone on TV says something...

I did acutally watch the episode. I thought it was great! Loved how the men were out the front and women backstage.

I agree. Unfortunately I didnt know too much on the subject to give her any info. Her excuse is that her DH has had problems 'down there' since forever and doesnt want her son to have the same problems - she wouldnt give specifics.

I would've thought that the procedure should be performed when bubs is younger. Her DS is 14 months old now.

Dr Oz said

Some people consider it
disfiguring, and doing it will reduce sensation during sex. "In a circumcised
male, the bottom part, the underneath part of the penis, is the most sensitive
part," Dr. Oz says, using a cucumber wrapped in a sock as a demonstration.
"If you've not been circumcised, about half of the erogenous tissue on the penis
is actually that foreskin area.
That bit is almost right, its closer to 75%, and it seems logical it would reduce pleasurable feeling.

Plus the foreskin covers over the glans-that
front
part, and that's the most sensitive part of the penis-so it doesn't get rubbed
on, so it stays a little bit more preserved for when the foreskin eventually
does pull back during intercourse."
Incorrect, the glans is the least sensitive part. The sensitive part is the skin.

The American Academy of Pediatrics doesn't take a position on circumcision.
"They say it's up to you," Dr. Oz says.

For boys who haven't been circumcised, it is important to learn the proper way to clean themselves.
Misleading. See http://www.circumstitions.com/Care.html

Uncircumcised boys are 10 times more likely to get an
infection than those who are circumcised, Dr. Oz says. To do it correctly, "You pull the skin back and you can actually get under here and clean this corner out. I don't think this is right.
Premature retraction of foreskins is rife in the US, and it has led to many infections.

Now these edges are where something called smegma resides and that stuff can get pretty nasty if you don't clean it up.
Except many sources say smegma is natural and healthy (for example the WA govt health state.) Anyway females have more smegma than males.

But here's the bigger issue. As a doctor I care about this. Most guys who are uncircumcised
have the foreskin leading off. This touches the pants and it gets scarred after a while.
I believe this is nonsense and was said in ignorance.

It can get pretty taut. Sometimes it goes over the tip of the penis and squeezes down on it and that can actually strangle the tip of the penis.

That's called a phimosis. When we see it, that's an emergency. And so for folks that
have not been circumcised, that's pretty important to keep in mind."
This is scaremongering. I don't see how a tight foreskin could be an emergency. Many young boys have been circumcised because of a false diagnosis of phimosis. In any case, real phimosis does not require circumcision.

NOW LADIES, What are you doing on here?? This DR OZ also said to have sex with your hubby 4 times a week for his health,. Now get to it!!:p

Funny I never knew about this until my mum and I discussed it the other night and she said that women have more. Thank god you have cleared the cleaning of the penis as I remember reading a thread here and someone told me I had to clean ds by pulling back the foreskin and I thought gee mum had 4 and I don't think she did that to 1 of my brothers.

I think it's a silly move for someone to commit to such a drastic change just because someone on TV says something...

 :yelclap:

My thoughts, if it wasn't suppose to be there it wouldn't be there!!

but if it's on OPRAH then don't millions of americans just blindly do whatever she says? Remember when she made some offhand comment about not eating beef because of Mad Cow disease, and the US beef industry literally almost collapsed? And all these beef farmers sued her?? bloody americans (no offense to any - i have many americans in my family - but in general, come on, you must agree.... :p)

Yep, the bath is a great thing, I look at an intact penis like a finger with a fingernail - if I've been digging in the dirt and have lots of dirt under my nail:
a) it won't get right into my nail bed because the nail is fused to the nail bed - just like the foreskin is fused to the head of the penis, so smegma/grime/whatever won't actually get in under the foreskin before it's retractable anyway;
b) a soak in the bath gets all that dirt out without me having to dig around in there - just like a soak in the bath gets a penis completely clean. And like Penn and Teller said - how hard is it to get a guy to rub his **** in the shower????

I actually had a bit of respect for oprah as a lot of her shows have really powerful views. this was so one sided though and sounded like a sales add!! I couldn't believe this guy though and even my mil and I were agreeing with each other that it was pretty much cr@p!!

I also find it funny that many have talked about the circ bit but I think the examination of the men is far more important!!
