The Family First candidate in the far north Queensland seat of Leichhardt says voters have a right to know the sexual preference of all candidates contesting the federal election.

A report in today's Courier-Mail newspaper says Family First's Ben Jacobsen demanded that the Liberal candidate Charlie McKillop declare if she is gay.

Mr Jacobsen, who is against gay relationships, says he was not targeting Ms McKillop, but speaking generally about every candidate.

"Look I think this is a public office, this is a person that's going to represent Leichhardt in our House of Representatives," he said.

"I think the public have a right to know the values that you're going to pursue in Parliament."

Campaigning in Cairns today, federal Treasurer Peter Costello says Mr Jacobsen's comments are unfortunate and says he is attempting to seek political advantage by raising the issue of sexual preference.

"I think upon reflection, that candidate will want to apologise for those remarks," he said.

Ms McKillop refused to comment.

Nationals candidate Ian Crossland says a person's private life should remain private.

Earlier in the campaign Mr Crossland told the media the seat was no place for a woman, a pointed reference to Ms McKillop.

Jeez... what is with all the bigotry lately?

Close your blasphemous mouth! Family First members would NEVER be...*chokes*...gay.

Seriously, as if anyone should have to announce their sexuality... and it's disgraceful to be singling out one particular candidate...:shame:

Would you want to know if they are religious?

Married?
If not married do they have someone? does that person live with them?

What do you think you should know?

Geesh - how sad it is when a person sees sexual preference and values as intrinsically linked.:(

Oh how does somebodies sexual preference have anything to do with their ability to represent their community
Whats next? Their bank balance, first car, star sign and favourite breed of dog??

You forgot the most important one......favourite colour:p

Favourite colours are very important. They can say a lot about a person. :p

I can't see any need for it. When I'm voting for someone I'm voting for what they believe and what is important to them. I want to know what they are going to do for the community, not who they sleep next to at night. :)

Seriously though...who cares really? Who cares who they shag? When, where or how?
Maybe if the started shaggin more they could get our country under control?

I don't want to know who they are sleeping with, and whether that person is the same sex as them or not!

Who cares if they are gay, straight, bi or just plain confused? As long as they aren't confused about their day job that they have been elected to do, what does it matter?

dearie me....family first seems as if they are trying to make the record for self-destructive parties

Let's go mad and try and hound a candidate about his/her policies rather than who they like to share their wet celery with.....

Favourite colours are very important. They can say a lot about a person. The Liberal's color of baby blue was carefully chosen, I heard. After heaps of marketing research, they found that baby blue expresses trust and compassion.

Remember Howard's line in the last election: "This election is about trust. Who do you trust to keep interest rates down?"

Sorry if this offends anyone but 'family first' are a bunch of idiots. Sure they have given themselves a lovely little title so that the unsuspecting, unresearched voter might think 'Mmmm, I love my family, they look good, they might help families'
They should change their name to 'nutters anom'

I definitely don't make sexual preferences a vital part of my vote. I could care less what somebody does in their own bedroom.
Just goes to show how perverted society can be.
So fixated on what others do with their privates.

The only time sexual preference would affect my vote is if their preference was for children or something...

It's ridiculous, and I agree with you 4Boys... what nutters!

since I heard that one of their candidates said in an interview (last election) that all lesbians should be burnt at the stake .. I highly doubt they are very tolerant people ..

which FRUSTRATES me - because their party name is misleading - that kind of bias, intolerance is NOT what I want my family thinking... so its hardly putting the family first .. sigh ..

I dont want to think about howard or rudd shagging - a man OR a woman

politics has nothing to do with sexual preference... sigh .. just get off your butt - do your job .. and make my life better - that is all I ask.

I usually count backwards when voting, and Family First are Family Last for me.

I lob Family First in with the other nutbag fringe groups like One Nation and Fred Nile's Christian Dems.

FF were recently embarrassed when their candidate for Reid in western Sydney, Andrew Quah, was found to have circulated explicit photos of himself on the internet. They quickly disendorsed him and expelled him from the party. Poor old Family First. You think they'd have a screening process? Apparently this Quah character was a rabid political activist while at university and was a committed communist - that is, until he found the light of Family First?

What do you think you should know?

I don't think I need to know ANY of that - I think that what people do has nothing to do with how they can run a country. I would like to think that my clients at work don't think that my sexual preferences, marital status, relgious beliefs etc would impact on my ability to do my job - and if they did, they'd be sadly mistaken.

The celery thing reminds me of one of my favourite Keatingisms:

(on being attacked by John Hewson) is like being flogged with a warm lettuce.

Oh, the eloquence! And the arrogance...

"I am not like the Leader of the Opposition (JHo). I did not slither out of the Cabinet room like a mangy maggot..."
"I'd put him (John Hewson) in the same class as the rest of them: mediocrity".

If politics must be adversarial, at least it should be entertaining too... :D
