View Full Version : Drama changing Nappies
Hi
is anyone out there experiencing problems with putting nappies on to their bub? Riley lets me take off the dirty nappy, and most of the time also lets me wipe his bum clean as well in one go, but as soon as it's time to put a clean nappy on, he's doing a runner - literally. Quite a drama unfolds then, with him kicking and screaming and so on... we tried to distruct him with toys, singing, clapping hands and feet, even brought the cat to have a cuddle - nothing works. It just happened now again and my mum (!!) had to come and hold him so we can succesfully change his nappy. We are using disposables and had no issues so far, he even never (!!) had a nappy rash or anything like that.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a major issue, you just feel so helpless when it happens:banghead:
Is that just a "normal" thing for his age (11 months) to be rebellious? Or is it a behavioural thing all together?? Any advice would help.
Thanks
Belinda
Completely normal. Its usually a battle here also. I keep a stash of interesting things near the change table to try to distract him - the sort of things he wouldn't normaly get to play with, like a tube of cream or a hairbrush or something different. Sometimes it works, sometimes not.
I just try to get the nappies off and on as fast as I can and be done with it.
Luckily we don't have the kicking and screaming, just rolling over and standing and just generally being a pest!
Where do you change him??
Well, since he's outsmarten us with the changing table and also is just too big for it, we now change him on the floor, mostly in the living room.I even put the TV on for distraction, with little luck.
But good to know that it happens to other people too

completely normal my 14 mnth old is doing it, such a nusicance i just give a tub of nappy paste or packet of wipes it too sometimes works or sometimes doesn't otherwise i call his brother in to distract him
As usual I find that distraction is the name of the game.
brushes, nappy balm etc. I have heard it suggested that putting a sticky plasters on baba's hands can distract very well. They supposedly spend ages trying to get them off. I have not tried that yet though.

I'm not at htis stage yet!!! but a friend of mine is and she now makes nappy time fun by getting her son to help, he gets everything ready, lays it all out on his bed and passes things to her to as she needs them, maybe worth a try???

Luckily DS doesnt walk yet (hes only 6 months) But it's a big challenge to even wipe him when he has a dirty nappy because he just always wants to roll over and what not. Toy's only work sometimes here also.
Good luck.
Thanks for all the tips!!
I tried the toys and the nappy creme and the brushes and the remote control and my Mobile phone - which by the way ended all covered in spit and now totally useless....- and nothing works anymore - :banghead: as I said, it;s like he's outsmarting us at the moment, little bugger
I might give Maria's Idea a go with the sticky tape...i can see hours of amusement - for me:laughing:
Cheers again

We went through this too, I can't remember how old she was but maybe around 16 months? I'd have to look up my past posts on here. I changed her on the floor too for awhile and then stuck a mirror on the wall beside her change table, right beside where her head goes. She's such a vain thing that it distracted her enough.
Good luck, it does usually pass but not necessarily very fast.

Isn't it annoying!!
My DD2 has done the whole try to escape thing since she could roll over!!
Now she can crawl she is even harder to get a nappy on her.
She is the same as your bub, she lets me take the old one off and clean her and then WHOOSH she's outta there!!

We've got a strap on our change table that really helps - she can still twist around, but not sit up. I also have a little slide whistle which I blow and then let her try to blow, which has worked a treat for the last few days (and I'm sure the neighbours just love it :p ).

Amelia crys when I put her nappy back on,
I think they all like being Nakey!! Back to nature!!
WooooHooo I'm Freeeeeee!!!! :smiliedance:
I would LOVE to give him the "freedom" of no nappy for a couple of hours, but even with polished floors inside it's just too messy. It's more the peeing thing than the poo.
SO unless I stay outside with him on the backdeck, no chance of going 'al natural' :crying:
I don't blame you, I have floorboards also, they're enough work without botty excreations too!! :shame:

I feel horrible sometimes changing my son... I feel like I am having to pin him down so he doesn't run off (well crawl fast anyway.. hehe). He still fits on his changetable and we have a plastic clip that keep shim in place... so that's wasy...
BUT... if we attempt to change his nappy anywhere else.. all hell breaks lose.. he rolls over and wont let me put the new nappy on him...
I try giving him toys etc... Also the box of wipes... tub of cream etc...
I dread to think what he will be like once he can just get up and run..:devil6:

OMG you beat me to it - I was just about to start this exact same thread! I am so tempted to lay newspaper all over the house so he can roam free!! I have tried everything, dancing, singing, drinks, food, toys, 'naughty' toys (creams, wipes, phone etc etc etc) nothing works! Pooey nappies are sooo much worse, he kicks, screams, rolls over, stands up - lets just say it gets pretty messy:thumbsdown: ... Its so fustrating... And I won't even bother changing him on the floor unless there is someone to hold him down (he is very strong!) otherwise he runs off and i have to catch him! I don't know what I am going to do when he outgrows the change table (I give it a month) Sorry I don't have any advice just wanted to say I know how you feel!!
Isn't it amazing how strong they get when they REALLY don't want to do something. I like the idea with the newspaper around the house BUT he likes cleaning it all up and moving everything into a corner (toys, papers, shoes, etc). And the frustrating thing is that there is just nothing you can do as a parent, cause no matter what you try to do, you just can't win this one. Guess we just have to sit it out ....:D

It makes me giggle.. if I put newspaper on the floor DS would EAT it in a matter of seconds... he has a thing for tv guides, newspapers, magazines... Everything is now GONE!! If we do have to have it in the house it's above Morgan reaching capabilities.... I was a bit bummed... had the nicest newspaper rack.. it's in the shed now... hehe

There are days when I let nature have its way but that usually means a whole lot more cleaning - thank god we don't have carpet!!
Same problem here too. Recently he discovered the tube of nappy rash cream..... then it was really on. If I didn't let him have the cream, he would turn hysterical. The only problem was it only took him 2 days to figure out how to get the top off and EAT the cream. ewwwwwww. (So now the cream is hidden)
Sometimes after I wipe him, I put him in his cot and let him stand up while I put the new nappy on. It's a bit easier. Now that my preggo tummy is starting to pop out, it's getting really hard to bend over the change table.
