Hi
Wondering if anyone has any experience with this. I had my 20 ultrasound and was told that our baby is short. Basically the limbs are measuring up small for head and abdomen size. I have to have another scan in 3 weeks to check if they are growing OK. Wondering if anyone else has had this happen and what was the outcome.

Hi, jacksmum, I think I gave you advice earlier about my friend who had this at a scan, and her little boy was fine. I know my one story doesn't really make you feel any better, but just don't lose hope for your beautiful baby, there is every reason for you to think that it will be O.K. I am thinking of you :hugs:

Hi jacks1mum. I had this at our ultrasound with DD. Being 6'2" and DH is 6'4" we were really worried, plus it was our first and every little thing seems like the end of the world. We had 2 follow up scans and every thing was fine. The OB was the one who did the initial scan and told us she was "short" but then we went to the sonographing place and they were like "WTF? Yeah she's a bit short but nothing to worry about". Anyway, she was born 51cm. Perfect. I wouldn't worry too much, I think it's like the whole you're having a 10 pound baby, then it turns out to be 7 pounds. I don't think they REEEEAAALLLY know, you know. Anyway enjoy your pregnancy!

Hi there

My baby was also showing up "short" at 20 weeks. He was on average for head, weight and limb size up to 20 weeks, then from 20 weeks onwards, his head and weight continued on average but the limb (femur length) was in the bottom percentile.
In addition, my 37 weeks ultrasound showed that my baby was very very small and the femur length was way below the average and it was possible that i had IURG (inter Uterine Retarded Growth??) (ie my baby had stopped growing).

However, my doctor explained that ultrasounds are not 100% accurate. As the baby is quite small, 1mm can make a huge difference. It is very diffucult to measure the length of the baby's limb using the ultrasound cause sometimes its hard to see where the bone starts and finishes.

Anyhow, my baby was born and he was perfect at 3kgs with everything in proportion. The ultrasound was way off.

Hope that reduces a bit of your worry.
All the best!

My son was 2 weeks ahead everywhere, with 'short' legs. He was 60cm long when he was born . His Dad is pretty tall, and I am pretty short... but DS has exactly the same 'build' as me and MY Dad.... long torso and shorter legs.

He is 3 now, perfectly healthy, very tall for his age, but not in a 'freakish' way.

My recent 20 week scan with my second son showed very similar measurments - the sonographer was a little concerned until I told her how my son was.

in both my pregnancys boys arms and legs have been "short"ccompared to head n abdo. boys wer 55 and 54cm at birth... not short at all!
wen preggas with ds2 they even wanted to send me to brissy womens to have a tertiary scan to check it but after conversing with a doc there they said that its very normal for a caucasian (Sp?) baby to have a larger head and tummy then the rest of measurements

sorry for the ramble, both my boys are well, not short at all:thumbsup:

Thanks everyone for their replies. I am very positive about it but is still very reassuring to hear from everyone.
