Hi all,
I just have a question for all you mummys and daddys with a refluxer or at least know about it!!
Ds has had a great month,i thought his reflux had gone and we were expecting to take him off the Zantc next month and start him on solids(start next week.he will be 5 month)All advise from my Pead..
Well sonce 3 am this morning the poor little guy has just screamed and screamed..Its so bad again that its heart breaking(and all my guilt comes flooding back!!)..
So my question is,can this be normal?
To be so bad, then so good for a month and then so bad again?? Can reflux go and come back like that??
Im wondering if its not the reflux, even though hes showing all the signs..
Thanks in advance..
Oh,also i wasent going to start him on solids till 6 months as wasent sure how that effects refluxers..I will go read the other thread about solids and reflux now..
Im just so upset for him..

Hiya,
:hugs: to you. Reflux is really a pain in the backside for the child and the parent. Hang in there!
Some quick questions:
Have you changed something for your little one?
Is he still on his meds now?
Did you know that the meds need to be increased as they gain weight?
Could he be teething or sick- as both of these will make reflux worse?
Has it come on suddenly or progressivly gotten worse?
What other symptoms other than screaming is he showing? If it's all reflux symptoms then it i'd say it's reflux flaring up again. If some of the symptoms are different the it could be something else.
Yes....starting solids will affect your little refluxer. But each refluxer is different and will react in different ways. We can all make some suggestions to help, and then from here it's all guess work for you. Try to avoid acidic foods, it will only be more painful for bubs reflux.
Most parents trial decreasing reflux meds after solids are well and truely established. Or when the baby starts to sit, crawl or walk. Decrease the meds slowly over many weeks and if any of the symptoms reappear then increase the meds back again. Then wait a while before your trial decreasing the meds again.
Hope all this helps.
If in doubt...go see a dr.

Thanks so much Mrs Little for your reply,
I have been thinking about what i could have changed and all i can think of is MY diet! I have started really trying to up the fruit and vegies(i am b/f)..But i dont think this could be the problem??
He is still on his Zantac and i didnt know that the dosage should go up with weight.
We were at the pead a few weeks ago and he didnt change it,thinking maybe because Ds was doing so extremly well.
I thought maybe teething as he is constantly sucking and chewing on his fingers, but his gums are not red or anything,BUT he did have a bit of a temp tonight,so i bathed him and gave him some panodol and lucky enough he has been down since 7pm.(touch wood now i have said that!!)
The other wied thing is that for the last three nights he has been waking around 3 am a little grizzly.Lasr night being the worst though not settling back down..
Poor little man is so tired from all the crying...
I am due back at the pead later in the month. If he is no better tomorrow then i will for sure be taking him to the Dr..
When i spoke to the Pead today about some other results i was after he told me to mylanta him again if needed..
Thanks so much for your time in trying to help.It was very very usefull and appreciated..:hugs:
Hi hun :hugs: to you...
I have a refluxer...Mrs little is excellent with her advice she has been a godsend to me...
I would be thinking also that the meds need to be upped. My ds is on zantac and he's just turned 5 months and is 7kg and prescribed 1.8ml x 3 daily...
When he was 5kg it was 1.5ml (this may help you work out if it needs to be upped)
I started ds on solids at 4 months on advice from the paed as well.... No probs with the solids...
Although i have figured out what not to give reflux babies... Well mine anyway....
You said that you have increased your veggie/fruit intake which is great however there maybe an overload going on. Be sure that the veggies are not ones that can cause extra acid production as it will affect bubs in the same way... (also some fruits cause pains in the gut, especially stone fruit... You probably already know about this...Sorry)
Obviously be wary of the fruits as well... Some bubs are more sensitive than others... This was the case for my sis-in-law... Her ds improved within 24hrs...
Can i just let you know that teething should not cause a temp unless it's a secondary symptom to an infection in the ear, nose, throat area...
Reflux can be aggravated by illness so it might be wise just in case to get him checked out if no better tomorrow.
The temp could also be that he is a little stressed as well and been crying lots (The poor little man)...
Sorry for rambling... Hope i helped in some way...:)
All the best...

we r on zantac too and although its just been increased for her weight ( now 7kg - 2mil a day) she still has days when she screams non stop (like today) no mattter what I do.
i think its possibly teething
i asked my gp about losec andf he said they only change to losec if zantac isn't working as its very strong.

lizzymcfizzy- sorry to hear about your DD's screaming days.
It really shouldn't be like that (if the screaming is reflux related).
And thats not true about zantac. Unfortunately each dr. has their own beliefs about reflux meds, so the opinions will vary and make life very confusing.
Zantac is one of the older reflux drugs and is often used first as it is the softest.
Then it normally goes to zoton.
Then to losec. (Generally the most commonly selected administered for reflux by drs nowadays, as it is pretty strong and pretty much garunteed to work).
Then others from here. (Like surgery)
Each dr. will start at a different level depending on their experiences and opinions.
BTW- did you know that babies can become accustomed to zantac and it can lose it's affect and dealing with the pain?
Hope this helps.
