View Full Version : Water smart!
I wish they could have showers that are just set for the perfect temp as soon as you get in. (As the hot water heats up, it could be diverted as they can already do now.
When I take the kids to their indoor swimming lessons I hate every second it takes for me to get the showers going at the end of the lesson. They do both get in the same one and I always try to get someone waiting to use it after so they don't have to fiddle with it either.
So thats one of my ideas lol.

Not sure of the logistics of it but it sounds good in theory Lotti.
Our attempt to save water means we only run our dishwasher when it is full and try to use the sink as minimally as we can. I also use dirty water (generally from cleaning purposes) on the garden instead of watering.

Yep we do that also.
We've also installed water saver shower heads and tap nozzle thingys. Our toilet system is hooked up to the water tank so when we flush the toilet it fills up from there with grey water. You'd be surprised just how much water you save, and money saved on your water bill using grey water for the toilet.
I only use the washing machine when it's full to the brim.
The three youngest share the same bath water. DS1 has a quick shower.
What is most important is teaching the kids how to be mindful of water usage so that they become aware also.
The best thing we have discovered is saving the bath water to flush the toilet with. It really makes you realise just how much water is used to flush a toilet!

We have stopped using the dishwasher all together and use our laundry and bathwater on the garden. Also, the kids only have a bath three times a week (unless they're really filthy) and they all use the same water. Cutting down on baths has also helped with their ecsema. We also try to catch as much water as possible from the shower while it is heating up to put on the garden.
I guess if everyone reduces where they can, it adds up to a lot of water saved.

a place i worked at befor i had DD actually had something like what i think your talking about.
they had a normal 'cold' tap and then the 'hot' tap was what we called the 'wash' tap, it put out the same temp all the time, it was warm but not hot IYKWIM.
i worked at a child respite centre for special needs children so it was important that none of the taps were hot.
im pretty sure the whole set up would have cost a fair bit though.
im lucky, out hot water thing is just outside our ensuite so our shower takes no time at all to heat up becuase it does not have to travel far.
i dont know if we do anything deliberatly to save water, like its not always on our mind and what we do is more of a habit. but i discoverd the other day that according to the water board we are WELL under our recommended usage, so what ever we are doing must be working:thumbsup:

Ok, so I've tried and tried to cut down on the length of time I shower for, but I can't get it down to two mins!!! I have long curly hair, so when I wash it, I take AGES. What can I do to cut down on the time it takes?

A shower cap? seriously I used to wash and condition my hair every day and I'm not sure why as it can't be good for my dry hair. So now I go as long as possible, I still bathe...I just don't wash my hair.

We have a set up like this Rheem or something will have to check we set the temp on the wall and you turn the tap on and probably use about 500ml of water before its the right temp. By the time you get in the shower its hot basically and running baths etc you dont waste that 500ml. I have a bucket to catch the first bit for washing or baths or dishes brushing teeth etc or the garden not that we have one though, etc. I love it :D just hate when i forget to put it on my temp that i like and then get in the shower and its cold or too hot LOL as you cant alter it if water is running
