my little boy does this off and on. He is now 18 months.
I just try to distract him when he is doing it.
I feel so sorry for them when they are teething, poor little things.
Yes it is bad for their teeth as such but there really isn't much you can do about it now. Eventually over time they'll wear their teeth down, different amounts for different children. Thankfully it's only their baby teeth and when their permanent ones come through they come through a bit differently aligned and it may be harder to grind- hopefully stopping the problem. In the mean time yes it does sound terrible.
If it is a problem later in life when their permanent teeth are through you can have a night guard/splint made to wear to bed to stop the teeth physically grinding.

Chloe did this when she first got her top teeth but stopped after a month or so. I think it was just the novelty of having new things in their mouth and the noise and/or sensation.
It's not good for them but I think most babes stop on their own. If it continues then maybe you could find a paediatric dentist in your area, though I'm not sure what they could do about it. An adult would be given a mouthpiece to wear at night to protect their teeth but that's not an option for a baby.

Thank goodness it doesnt last long. :) It is a horrible sound and can't imagine it is good for his little teeth.
