View Full Version : Hpv
Hi,
I had a pap smear last week and now have been told I have HPV. Now I am very worried that I may not be able to have a Vaginal Birth.
I am very worried and would like it if anyone has any idea about it

I'm definitely no expert and I dont know an awful lot about HPV, but if you dont mind me asking, do they think the infection is just on the crevix or do you or have you had warts on or in your vagina also?
I know if you have the wart virus there is a small risk of bubs being born with warts in their throats which can be quite dangerous. BUT I would imagine if you dont actually have any warts persent at the birth then would that mean the baby would be safe to be born vaginally?
I'm not really sure I think you need to speak to your obstetrician. I think if it was me and there was any risk I would go for the ceaserian. Its easy for me to say that as I had to have a section with my first so making this decision is alot easier for me.
Dont get upset or worried, loads and loads of women have HPV and give birth all the time but do consult your obs or Dr who is looking after you and get all the information you can so you can make the best decision for you.
Don't worry, you have lots of time to get all the info and it will all be ok. There are so many worse things you could have found out, HPV is really common and the Dr's will know exactly how to help you.

I have had HPV before i was pregnant with my two bubs, mine showed as abnormal cells. If that is the case i don't think you have to worry about it. (although the virus never goes away, it can lay dormant like the hepres simplex virus ie: cold sores)
If it is the warts strain though and in an active stage then it may be a concern to deliver vaginally, im not 100% sure on that though.
I know there can be a difference as to whether it is a concern or not depening on when you actually contracted it, meaning before pregnancy or after. Definately talk to your OB about it, if you have one? or go back to the Dr's and make them find the relevant info for you as to the risks there are.
I have read that it is a minimal risk but i guess when it comes to our bubba's we prefer there to be no risks at all.
Hope it works out for you! Good luck :hugs:

I agree with MEL. I'd say if you dont actually have physical warts present at the time of birth then I can't see how it would effect bubs being born vaginally, cause it would be dormant.
Did they tell you what strain of HPV it is or give you any information about it?
You probably don't know when you contracted it cause this was obviously a shock to you. When was your last smear? If last smear was clear then it was sometime between the last and this one. best chat to your Dr
