View Full Version : Play dough recipe?
Does anyone have a good play dough recipe they can pass on? I was told that there was a good one on the back of the cream of tartar box but my supermarket doesn't stock c of t in boxes, so that was no use. The children's games book I have has a recipe with ingredients like "alum" - which strangely enough I don't stock in my pantry  So a recipe which uses everyday ingredients would be great.

This one makes up a smaller amount & lasts for months in an airtight container
1 cup plain flour
1 cup water
1/4 cup salt
2 tbspn cream of tartar
1 tspn cooking oil
few drops food colouring
mix over low heat in medium saucepan til comes together (you'll know when)
Let cool til you can handle it then knead until smooth.
Thanks willsmum - will give it a go. We seem to go through a lot of the commercial stuff so I thought it was time I was a "good" mother and made some instead! :)

I use the same recipe as Willsmum but I add a teaspoon of vanilla essence to the mixture. It makes the dough smell a lot better (which could be why everytime I turn my back my son is eating it!!!!) :)
Thanks for the tip. dd1 eats the commercial stuff which smells awful, and her father's threats to take it away for the rest of her life don't seem to have much effect  so I figure at least if I make it I know what she is eating! And this way it will smell okay too!
