I too avoid antibiotics unless they are absolutely nessasary. The majority of colds and flus are caused by a virus and not a bacteria and so antibiotics are usless anyway.
When my kids get sick i use the fess, vicks and a vaperiser. you can have the vaperiser on all night so they tend to sleep a little better. If I do give them any thing I give them dimatap to help clear up their nose.
Just a question what are you using the phenergan for? Isn't it an antihystamine that is given for allergies?
Good luck hope your little boy is feeling better soon

I've used KARVOL. It's a decongestant. It's a little gel capsule that you open and put the liquid onto a flannell or something and I hang it over ds cot. It's been my lifesaver so far as I don't want to use any drugs with him.

As you mentioned I also elevate his bed. This has worked well for me so far, hoope it helps for you.

Good luck and hope your little man gets better soon.

Hey Rell

My doctor recommended it to me. Apparently it is a natural antihistamine that also assists bubbys with sleep.

Morgan had a rash with this viral thing he had this week so he recommended it to me. We spoke with our pharmacist who worked out an exact dose to give him for his body weight.

Worked wonders on the rash... also did well for the sleeping..

I HATE giving him anything... if I do I try and make it a natural product ... anything than pump him full of anti-biotics or pills / syrups.

He's 90% better today.... Still cranky but able to breathe alot easier... I am glad of it... I thought I'd go mental with another night of being awake every half hour as we have been past three nights in a row.

Hi

I hope your little one is on the mend:) I am surprised (well maybe not actually:rolleyes: ) that phenegan has been recommended as natural...

Syrup: Each teaspoon (5 ml) of Phenergan Syrup Plain contains 6.25 mg promethazine hydrochloride in a flavored syrup base with a pH between 4.7 and 5.2. Alcohol 7%. The inactive ingredients present are artificial and natural flavors, citric acid, D&C Red 33, D&C Yellow 10, FD&C Blue 1, FD&C Yellow 6, glycerin, saccharin sodium, sodium benzoate, sodium citrate, sodium propionate, water, and other ingredients.

We go the natural route always and dont use antibiotics...I have found the Brauer range of homeopthic medicines really good:) Karvol is also great as is using a vaporiser...and tilting the cot as you said...

The thing with natural products and remedies is that they are nor a quick fix like antibiotics or drugs, they generally take longer to work but the overall result is better and they are much kinder to your body...

Thankyou for the information on the fenergan...

I guess the doctor meant it wasn't perscribed... but I didn;t realise it's contents...to be honest with you I feel like I have been walking around in a bubble last couple of days due to lack of sleep.

I'm glad his rash is gone... my DP and I agreed to only give it to him until the rash was gone.. so he only had two doses.... and we weren't planning on giving him anymore..

Katherine,

please be carefull with the phenergan, it is a antihistimine, but it also suppress respiratory drive and has a seditive effect. I understand that it was given for a rash but I wouldn't continue giving it to a baby with a respiratory infection.

I know that you really need some sleep but phenergan with its effect on the repiratory system is not the way to get it.

The reason I was asking about phenergan is that can sometimes have the oppersite effect and kids can't sleep:eek:
Great to hear you boy is feel much better:smiliedance:

I agree, Phenergan is for emergency use only, definately not for when they are ill with chest cold/respiratory.It's like a tranquiliser for some, makes them deliriously sleepy and zonks them:thumbsdown:

My 5 month old just had a bad cold so I bought some Infant Dimetapp and that helped clear his nose. Now having said that, I was desperate too, poor fella couldn't breathe. We also had saline drops for his nose. My doctor recommended to steer away from Demazin but I can't see the difference from that and Dimetapp.Anyway cold cleared up and he could breathe. We also had a vaporiser going with Euky bear drops.

Hope that helps

Voting for Brauers here!!!! I love that stuff!!! On the one occasion my son has been sick in his 2 1/2 years (go the booby!!!) we steamed him in the ensuite coz it's really small LOL, had an infuser in the bedroom with tea tree and eucalyptus, kept him dosed on the Brauers cold and flu and that was it. He had trouble with the boob sometimes because it's hard to suck with a blocked nose, poor lamb. Very upsetting! But usually in the steam it would clear enough and he could suck then. He had croup and the steam was like some miraculous agent! Coughing baby goes in, normal baby comes out. And when I think that as a child I was given antibs for it! Sigh.

I find Dimetapp pretty good. Also Fess is good, if you can get it up their nose.
