View Full Version : Having breast milk tested??
My hair dresser told me that the childhood nurse can test the breast milk and look at it under a microscope to see it has enough nutritional value.
Especailly good for bubs that don't put on weight well.
I have never heard of this does anyone know if this true??

You can't test the nutritional value of anything underneath a microscope
And there is no way any child health nurse can tell you whether your milk is 'nutritional' enough by looking at it!
In this country, breastmilk from almost any woman has completely sound nutritional value  You could eat Maccas all day every day and your breastmilk will still be first rate - only thing is the quantity may be affected - but not the quality :)
I think your hairdresser has been playing in her chemicals too long

Yeah, crock of ****e, norty hairdresser :shame:
Breastmilk is wonderful amazing miraculous stuff. If a bubs is not putting on weight "quickly enough" (although what the hell does that mean anyway - quickly enough for whom???) then bubs needs feeding more often, that's all.

Like Phineas said
If your health and diet is good then your breast milk will be fine.
Lotsa so called "expert"medical people will go on about not keeping to weight charts etc but those charts are wrong and babies go through varying stages of development. You hear advice on comping or giving cereals but this is mostly uneccessary except in rare cases and actually can compromise your childs health rather then assist it.
Just an aside that baby food lablelling is about to change with foods currently recommned for 4 months up to be changed to 6+ months because they now realise babes gut is not ready for it.
You will know by your child's behaviour and general well being if they are hungry or not. Plus their need to feed constantly of course.
I would be more inclined to suggest that you read up an foods that help with milk production.
Australian Breast Feeding association is a great source of info and support.

As everyone else said, the quality of your milk is fine. The idea of breastmilk being in low in nutritional value is straight out of the 50's. In first world countries where we have free access to good food its' not an issue.

ROFL
I agree with everyone else.
Even in third world countries all mums nutrition goes straight to her BM and it is the absolute last thing to suffer.
You can rest assured there is absolutely nothing wrong with any womans milk in terms of nutrtional value and yes this sounds like one of those myths that should have gone out in the dark ages.
Makes me wonder where people come up with this cr@p!!
O dear. What utter utter cr@pola!!
Can you PLEASE get hold of some literature from the Australian Breastfeeding Association, or the La Leache League to educate your hairdresser, thinking of the number of people she may have told this to makes my hair curl!( :D )
Unbelievable! She should get her facts right before talking about something so important. Who knows the number of women she might turn off breastfeeding. It is the best source of nutrition available for babies - and it is has even been given to adults suffering from illnesses like cancer.
