tyler will be 6months next thur and she has never had a nappie rash,,, i only use huggies
I don't think they give bubs nappy rash...never gave DS any. However, DD seems to react to certain brands and looks like she has the worst nappy rash ever, change back to a cloth nappy, or a brand that she's not sensitive to and it disappears within a couple of hours.
I just don't use them much coz it gets sooo expensive.

Both DD#1 and DD#2 developed a rash when using disposables. I think they have a reaction to the gel in them, as opposed to nappy rash being caused by contact with urine or faeces.
I used cloth nappies except when travelling with both of them, although the childcare centre DD#2 went to used disposables, and it was not good for her butt.

I'm pretty sure that Huggies advertise that they don't give nappy rash !

I don't know that it's possible to give a straight yes or no response to that.
I used only disposables (Huggies) to start with and my bub developed quite a red bottom which turned out to be a kind of thrush. I think it was partly to do with the really hot whether we were having at the time.
A lot of nappy rash is caused by a reaction between the chemicals in the baby's urine and their poo, and so I think the theory is that because disposables are more absorbent, and therefore dry up against bub's bottom, they help avoid nappy rash.
However most modern cloth nappies and covers are more breathable than disposables (the cheap PVC 'pilchers' that you buy at the supermarket aren't breathable) and if you're using fleece liners (which allow moisture through to the cloth but don't actually feel wet themselves) then you will probably find that they're just as effective as disposables when it comes to avoiding rash.
The key, in my opinion, is to change the nappy often and find a good barrier cream. I use predominantly cloth and have not had a problem with nappy rash (but have also not had a problem with disposables since that first episode).
Some babies are also just more susceptible to nappy rash.
Hope that helps.
My two boys have never had nappy rash and they have always used disposables. I've tried EVERY brand that I can get my hands on.
However, my partner's kids come to us every week with HORRIBLE nappy rash. In fact I have never seen them WITHOUT nappy rash!
The reason why: Their mother doesn't bother to change their nappies until they virtually fall off(no joke).
Even so, if you're concerned you can get barrier creams that you put on bubs bottom to help prevent it.

Some babies get nappy rash no matter what you use.

Yep i agree with chellegoth !
My bubs gets a rash no matter what i use whether it be disposies or cloth.
I have to be careful as he has sensitive skin so he doesnt get bathed daily but every second day is fine. We also use a barrier cream which helps but no matter what it still can happen. I also think foods have a lot to do with it as we never had a prob until around the 6mth mark when he was going great guns with his solids.
That being said i often find he now whinges if i go to use a disposable hehe he seems to prefer his clothies ! :D

DS didn't get Nappy rash as such but would develop red marks when put into disposables.

some one told me that disposabul nappes dont gives bubs nappy rash. is this true?:confused:Nappies don't cause nappy rash - a reaction to something else causes nappy rash, whether it be viral, heat, allergy - you get the drift. Any bub can get nappy rash regardless of whether they are in cloth or disposables or indeed even knickers - my 3 yr old DD has a bad case at the moment due to acidy poo - she shouldn't drink apple juice
So cloth or disposable all bubs are susceptible to getting 'nappy' rash.

DS is in disposables and only gets nappy rash when he is teething cos their urine becomes more concertrated then.

coby gets a rash when he wears disposables for too long...
he wears cloth at home and disposables when we go out and as soon as i get home i swap him back and let him go nappy free for awhile...
when he does get a rash tho i use dermaid pink soft 1% cream... works wonders!!
I find it rather interesting that there is SUCH a MASSIVE market for nappy rash creams and barriers (sudocream, Zinc + castor oil, daktarin, bepanthan, paw paw, etc...) if disposables DON'T give nappy rash. After all, disposables are, albeit unfortunately, the most common type of nappy used in Australia.
So, I agree with the above consensus that some babies are more susceptible to nappy rash than others and one cannot make a blanket statement that using a particular type of nappy increases the probability of a child developing nappy rash. Nappy rash is caused by a wide range of things, allergy, chemical irritation, contact dermatitis, broken skin getting infected, strong wee, long contact between poo and skin, chaffing, thrush... Regardless of the nappy type used, regular changes and mild cleansing are generally the best ways to prevent nappy rash.

Sodium polyacrylate will cause an allergic reaction in some people. It is the chemical that they use in nappies to make them trim but absorbant. It IS a chemical, so of course it will have adverse affects, rash being on of them.
'nappy rash' is apparently often caused by a reaction to what bub is eating.
My son gets a very red bottom if he eats anything with apple or tomato in it! we've learned to avoid these now! ;)
My son has only ever used huggies and has quite a red lil bottom quite a few times.
And no he doesnt sit in a wet nappy for long either
oh dear... huggies is a clever company... they have fantastic marketing!!!
my little man is 4 months old and has NEVER had a rash.... we change him often (99% of the time he is in a cloth nappy- with the occasional disposable used when everything is washing)
we just ensure that he is changed HEAPS (which is one of the beautiful things of cloth... you can change soooo often - it costs nothing :D) - and we use sudocrem as a preventative if he looks tender anywhere...
its not the nappy - it is the bubs sensitive skin - or a reaction to food that causes the rash (unless the kid is left to sit in a wet nappy - which you do see from time to time  )
a funny thing I read on another site - the fact that there are only DISPOSABLE companies... the smaller companies and SAHMs who make cloth nappies cant afford the research to back up the fact that cloth doesn't cause rashes any more than disposables do!!! a nappy is a nappy - and a nice cloth nappy can stay as dry as a disposable. (just add a microfleece liner and bubs will stay perfectly dry!!)

My DD only gets a slight nappy rash if she is teething. As long as we only use huggies nappies she never gets a rash from them. (she has very sensitive skin too).

All in good time, one day we will get local research for local conditions and modern nappying. :fingerscrossed:
