Hi

There was and article in yesterday paper, about a whopping cough epidemic within South East Queensland.

The article was basically saying that anyone, parents, sister, brothers, grandparents, in contact with children, especially babies who had not the their third whopping cough needle, should be revaccinated, even if they had been vaccinated as a child.

As a parent of a 4 month old boy, and as a teacher of special needs children, I was wondering what other mums within South East Queensland though and wheather or not they would go an immunise themselves and family against this????

Im not in QLD but if it were in NSW i would.
I had whooping cough coming up for 5yrs ago now & it was horrible !
I dread to think of what babies go through :(
It took me a good 3mths to get over as i ended up with pneumonia etc & was re vaxxed as well as now having to have the flu vax every year to be careful as i have such bdaly scarred lungs
Its the most scary thing i have ever gone through being that you can take a breath in but you cant exhale so you just continually breathe in making the horrible "whoop" noise aauuugh makes me shudder thinking of it again.

If you were vaxxed against it when little then bubs should have temporary antibodies this is usually why vaxxing for these types of things doesnt kick in till they are older etc.
Just keep bubs away from "known" areas would be my best advice as well as anything like a playgroup or the likes where you know some parents dont worry about bringing a sick child along.
I got it from a work colleague who only had a bad cough for awhile but still came to work as he thought no one would suffer

I am in the same boat. Ds is 4 1/2 months and has only had the 2 and 4 month needles and the spokesman for QLD health said in the article that babies aren't protected against it until they have had all three needles. It is the pertussis part of the DTP injection I think.

I am going to call my GP and see what she says we should do.

Thanks for the info

How would I know/find out if I DP and I have been vaxx for whooping cough?

To tell you the truth, I am dying for someone to stick a needle into DP  . Since I have known him, I have had, by my reckoning, a good 200 needles, little dude has had his needles up to 6 months and DP has has zip, zilch, nada.

I wanna see him suffer :D .

My GP said that both my mother and I need to go in and have the boster. Mum because she looks after DS for me while I am at work.

I guess it is better safe than sorry.

lukaelmo you could try asking your GP, but due to privacy laws I don't think they would tell you. I know my Gp wont discuss Dh medical history ect with me. You could try his parents or close family member or friend they might be able to help. I know now there is childhood immunisation record run by QLD health I don't know if they might have a record, it might of been before they strated keeping the records.
