View Full Version : Advice on using losec

My DS was diagnosed with silent reflux a month ago and was put on losec. It has had excellent results.

This week I changed the way in which I give the losec to him. Instead of dissolving the tablet and giving it to him via syringe, I am using a solution made by a pharmacist. The reason for the change was to make it easier to administer.

However, I understand that losec in solution may not be as effective as a dissolved losec tablet, since it is absorbed in the stomach and not lower down in his digestive system.

Does anyone have any experience in using the losec in solution and did they find that their child's treatment was affected as a result ? I am really concerned that the pain from the reflux will reoccur as a result of the change I have made.

I would appreciate any advice.

Kim

I've heard that losec can be made into a liquid....our local hospital does it.

My friends who are using it....say that it works really well.

I'm a zantac user so i can't help you much with losec.

My understanding of both drugs is that they both change the acidity of the stomach ( can't remember if it's higher or lower) so that it's not painful when the food does return up the oesophegus (sp?). It doesn't stop reflux and has nothing to do with the digestive system. It should only be absorbed into the stomach.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Mrs Little. Its now been 5 days since he was moved to the liquid and there hasn't been a deterioration in his symptoms, so I'm pleased it seems to still work.

How has your bubs been recently ? I remember your posts in early January about seeing a specialist for him. Has he improved ???

Glad it's working. I hate seeing my son in pain...so i know what you meant when you were anxious about changing the meds.

My son's reflux is much better now we're using Zantac. However, he still has wind problems....it's driving me nuts. I'm considering changing to either a soy or goats milk formula, in hope that his wind settles down. He's due for the follow-on formula in 3 weeks (as he'll be 6 months then)...so i figured i'd change then and give it 2 weeks...if it doesn't work i'll have to go back to the normal formula and wait for the wind problems to go away?!!?

Keep my updated on how your little one goes.

Hi Mrs Little

I have just read over some of your January posts about the acid production overnight. My DS also has the same problem and is up between 4 and 6am in alot of pain. I found Mylanta the quickest fix for these attacks. Can you give me any indication of what worked for you and how long they went on for? Also did you go to the gastroenterologist and if so did s/he suggest anything different? My DS is having a barium swallow on Thurs to rule out any structural problems eg a hernia. I think it unlikely and am guessing that we will just have to ride it out and wait for time to strengthen that little muscle. I vaguely recall someone saying gymbaroo may help muscle development - anyone heard that???

Hiya there....

I didn't go to the gastro dr. .....i'm not keen on giving my son a barium meal.

The zantac has been fantastic...no attacks in the middle of the night. I don't want to give him mylanta as long term use is bad.

Although....i do wonder why he still has some problems feeding...i think it's due to wind -but it doesn't seem to go away.

I'm am interested to find out how you go at dr.? What makes you think it's a hernia?

I've been trying natural remedies too....it works well for his digestive system.

Kim,

My son was perscribed losec at about 2 weeks old... I bought it but I couldn't bring myself to give him tablets at that age... silly I know

Anyway.. they suggested to me that I crush the losec... however they did state that there were little pellets inside the losec which are slow release... the aim was to crush it but to try and keep the pellets in tack..

I wish I could offer a way to do this... but I didn't even open the box or try to crush them

My 4 year old dd has losec. I desolve the tablet in 5mls of water in a syringe and then give it to her that way, then I make sure I give her some water or milk straight after it, to make it go down. I also found it tends to sets in the syringe pretty quick so when u add the water you need to work with it quickly. DD doesn't have a problem taking losec in a syringe...:)

Hi

I have just come back from DS barium swallow. Firstly I should say it is not at all invasive or distressing so do not be afraid of it if it is suggested to you.

We did not suspect a hernia however the paed wanted to rule out any anatomical abnormalities such as a hernia.

The swallow revealed that there were no anatomical abnormalities which is a relief. The study did make a positive diagnosis of reflux ... we could watch on the screen the barium travelling up and down his osephageus - repeatedly and in large quantities . While it does not change the way we treat him it does give me comfort that we are treating him correctly - esp when you hear people saying "reflux is overdiagnosed" "your baby is just tired" "it must be something you are eating"....

I have recently started using the Karicare food thickener as a gel. DS is breastfed and I make up some of the thickener about 10 ml and give it to him before or after a feed from a syringe. It seems to be helping.

Glad to hear your bubs is ok.

Thankyou for re-assuring me about the barium swallow....i think it may end up being something we have to do- so that we know that it is reflux. Just like you wanted to know too.

We are seeing a paed. on Monday next week who specialises in the reflux area. I am looking forward to having someone examine my son and check all possibilities for his distress during feed times, lack of food taken each day and disturbed day sleep.

I used filtered water this morning because the kettle had only just boiled and wasn't cool enough....and he drank the full 200mls! I've never seen him do that.

So i tried again at the next feed and he took 150mls....no fussing. It was great!

What kind of things are you doing for your bubs now that he is offically diagnosed with silent reflux? Hope things improve for you now.

Well, unfortunately my optimism with the liquid form of losec was short lived !!!

After 7 days on the liquid version I noticed that Oscar's fussiness at the breast had returned. I now have him back on the dissolved tablets. We live and learn ladies, but it was a costly mistake - that bottle cost me $45 !!!! :banghead:
