View Full Version : God Parents
Hi Everyone,
Just after some advise and opinions..... We are looking at christening our DD next early next year in a catholic church the same one we got married in. I am not really religious so do not know the protocal. We can not decide on god parents we have one couple and a friend...
Would you ask all three... Just have the couple... or one of the couple and the friend....
I am not sure if having three is a little over done but do not really want to leave some one out... what do you think? Does anyone know what the church allows can you have 3??
THANKS!!!
At least one has to be catholic, and you can only have one godfather and one godmother.

The Catholic church will allow you to have 3 Godparents but at least one of them must be Catholic themselves.
Thanks They are definately all catholic... That is not a problem....

Just have all three. My DS only has 2 but my sister has 3 and I have 4 so it definately can be done.
The whole point of having godparents is so that if anything happens to you and your husband they will step in to take care of nurturing their religious learning and beliefs, so it serves to pick the two people who best reflect the wishes of yourself and your husband in relation to your catholic faith and the way you want the kids brought up. Both my kids have my only sister as their godmother because to be honest we don't have any other catholic women (other than my mum) in the families that would carry out my wishes as to how they would be brought up in the catholic faith. So make your choice with this in mind and forget about anyones feelings, that is not what it is about. Hope that helps with the decision :D
I didn't know you could have more than one, you learn something new every day :detective::thumbsup:

We can have up to 4 godparents and at least 1 has to be Catholic. I have a dilemma where I have 3 very close girlfriends but only 1 is Catholic. I would like to have all 3 girls and BIL but DH only wants 2 g/p's, which means I'd be leaving 2 of the other girls out and only asking the Catholic one as BIL is not Catholic.
(sorry - very confusing!)
Can you just have the couple and tell the friend that they will be g/p to the next child?

In the catholic church you can have as many god parents as you want, but one HAS to be catholic. This is what my uncle told us when we were organising our DD Christening, and he was the priest.

From memory, our priest makes a 4 g/p limit because some people go overboard. I'm sure if you absolutely had to have more, they would allow it.

I could be wrong but for a girl you have 2 godmothers and one godfather - boys have 2 godfathers and one godmother?!

Usually only one of each for Catholic baptism but its really up to the parents.

I think that the reason for the limit is to try and get people to pick their Godparents for the right reason, and not to just pick 6 different people so that you don't offend or leave anyone out iykwim? Some people treat it like a Wedding party, but it is not meant to be like that at all, it is a very important role, and obviously the Church would like to keep it as such.:)
