View Full Version : They'll do anything to make $$
I was in Target yesterday and was astounded to see this...
http://www.target.com.au/html/nursery/babyplus.htm
I wonder how many people will be suckered into buying it.
It says it is scientifically proven to have benefits, but I don't buy it. How much of a headstart can we give our kids anyway? I think this is going to far. Just a money making sceem IMO.:thumbsdown:
What do others think?
Sounds like a load of rubbish to me, but I'm sure they will get plenty of sales.:thumbsdown:

People will sell anything and people will buy anything. Have you seen the cat toilet training device they are selling now??
Yes, I saw this somewhere and absolutely cracked up.
I plan to sing to my baby so it can get used to the rhythm of the songs and will hopefully settle to them once its born. That's as far as I'll go.
Although, it will probably settle just as easily to the Dr Phil tune or the Eastenders intro, :laughing:
I love Dr Phil, he's great!!
Yeah, I tape him every day and as soon as I get home you will hear the intro music booming out from my house. I used to fast forward the music but now I let it play.
So bubby should be fairly used to it by the time he/she is born!! I just want to see if it works.
ROFL - oh DEAR - isnt' there pressure to have the smartest child!!! teach them early... teach them early .. :rolleyes:
how about just letting the kid sit there quietly enjoying the comfort and peace while creating eye brows and fingernails!!?? gee WIZZ like the world isn't loud enough!
- I thought I was being a very good mumma ... teaching JAck about music and rhythm.. with the car stereo up loud!! :D that is about as far as I would go!!!

What a load of codswallop!
It says it mimicks the sound of the mother's heartbeat...why would you need to...I know we've come along way (medically wise), but as far as I know, there still needs to be a mother's heartbeat in order for the baby to survive in the first place!!!!:rolleyes:
I wouldn't be surprised if the baby's saying, "Good Lord, one lot of banging is enough...someone turn that darn racket off!"

What next??? There was something on tv the other day, I think it was on Sunrise. They've proven that by exposing babies and toddlers to thing such as Baby Einstein or early learning programmes, that in fact they make no difference at all. There was a country who gave their babies Mozart CD's ....etc..... from birth and in fact the educational standards were no different than they were previously. Very interesting.

People will do anything if they think it will give their bub a 'head start' in life.
I wouldn't be surprised if the baby's saying, "Good Lord, one lot of banging is enough...someone turn that darn racket off!"
:laughing: I agree. Besides, what's the point of imitating the mother's heartbeat when they've got the real thing right there? :confused:
Incidentally, my DH and I sing in the choir at the Anglican Cathedral here in Newcastle, and we have found that the sound of full pipe organ blasting out hymns is actually soothing to our bub. She sleeps right through... :rolleyes:
So I guess there is something to be said for becoming accustomed to things from the womb. DD also loves hearing me sing (I sang right through my pregnancy and even did a concert two days before she was born! My MIL brought along a bunch of towels just in case. LOL).
But that's getting off the track. I agree. Big money waster:thumbsdown: Check out what it claims if you investigate further:
Babies at birth and infancy
* Develop better sleeping patterns
* More readily nurse
* Have increased ability to self-sooth
* Are more interactive and responsive, and
* Are more relaxed and alert at birth.
And later in life, these children demonstrate
* Earlier developmental milestones
* Improved school readiness and intellectual abilities
* Greater curiosity and independence, and
* Longer attention spans.
We're going to see a generation of over-stimulated babies if we're not careful.
Okay - I want to see how they researched the claims they make!!!
Let me guess - sample size = 1. Mother very motivated and parents her bub well anyway. Who was this baby being compared to - where was the double blind subjects.
Sorry - very sceptical. I talk to my bub and massage (nb. mainly to prevent stretchmarks). I also sing to DS before he goes to sleep - so that's bub's singing quota for the day.
Not sceptical that bubs whose mums use this won't develop well -but sceptical that bub's good development can be attributed to the machine. I believe that a mum who is prepared to pay $200 for one of these will be prepared to do whatever is said to be good to help bub's development, so will be stimulating bub well from day one.

Exactly my thoughts!

:laughing: YUP - my mother said the same thing when we went to the baby expo last year - she gasped at all the toys and things (the rocker that played music, vibrated and had things to look at.... ETC) she said 'no wonder we have more kids coming through with ADD and ADHD!! they are never allow to just sit and look around!! or to find things to do for themselves... you just played with my tupperware!!!' LOL
- note ... please realise that I am NOT directly linking items or parenting techniques for various syndromes... but I DO think we are encourged to buy WAY to much stuff for our kids!!!- (dont want to end up with a thread about how ADD occurs) :)

I wasn't game to say it, but I'm glad someone did!
Never underestimate the novelty value of a cardboard box, washing basket or saucepan cupboard I say!

Huge multinational companies become what they are because of products like these but it is the consumer buying them that gives them a licence to do this. Consumers really need to question most 'baby learning' products before buying them. 99.9% of these products are total wastes of time and money and babies do not become 'smarter' for having used them.:thumbsdown:
People will sell anything and people will buy anything. Have you seen the cat toilet training device they are selling now??
The CAT TOILET WORKS!!! But is a pretty gross thought!! We discussed getting one when we got Monty, but the idea of seeing kitty floaters waiting to be flushed was a bit off putting!!

Oh my god - that thing must come from America - there nuts for this stuff over there, can even get a computer game to sit your new baby in front of and teach it to read!!! What crap.
Funny thing is the research would be correct, I know a women who plays in an orchestra (large one) and she practised one particular piece over and over on her Cello, throughout her pg cause she needed to, when baby was born it was the only tune that settled him, even after several years of not hearing it at age 6 he stills recognises it and doesn't know why!!!!
Hopwever that is different to what this devise claims it does!!!!!
What a crock!!:thumbsdown:

I am fascinated... what happened to the good old days where people let nature and development take it's course. My DP and I spoke to my little boy constantly when he was still in the womb... we'd have nightly conversations... it was such a great chance for my DP to get involved in the pregnancy as well and I felt that it brought us closer together.
One thing that did spin me out... about five minuted after DS was born he was laying on my chest and DP went to ring his family to let them know... DS lifted his head up off my chest and turned his head to follow DP voice.... My mom, the RN and I just sat there amazed... it was like he already knew his voice...
We are going to TTC the end of this year and I think I will avoid the $199 expenditure and stick to the good old talking and singing... Besides $199 is ALOT more baby items like wipes, nappies, clothes.... etc...

$200?!! no thanks!!
& as mentioned earlier - how do they know their claims are accurate? how do they know that the children tested weren't going to be advanced, anyway?!
i say just let nature take it's course! & i agree with the ADD thing - there r too many distractions for babies. i never watch TV, only the occasional DVD - so Q. will have to put up with only an hour (or less) of TV a day. i also refuse to buy lots of toys (i hope she doesn't get given too many, if she does they might get boxed/ given away...) as i want her to express creativity in what she has... ;)
anyway, i plan on buying some nice jazz music & playing that to Q. before she's born, & after to relax her. but i wouldn't do something like that to advance her learning - she can learn at her own pace! i want her to enjoy her childhood!!
