View Full Version : Is induction easier the 2nd time around?

This is a questions to those mums who have been induced more than one time. Was your induced labour the same or was it easier the 2nd time around because your body went through it already?
I was induced 3 days before my due date with DD because of a liver illness called cholestasis (it can cause a stillborn baby if it stays in too long). I am 1 day over my EDD today and got symptoms of this illness over the last week. Made a blood test today and will know tomorrow, if I have to be induced tomorrow.
My first labour was 14 hours and very painful and unconfortable (because of all the monitors I could not really try out more positions or have a bath).
So is there any chance that the 2nd labour even though it might be induced, will be much shorter and easier?
Hi darl
I was induced with both bubs DS i had the gel so was still able to get up and move around.
I was in labour for 18 hours with no drugs.
DD my waters broke and was induced the next morning with them breaking my waters and the drip. I never got any regular contractions and after 7 hours of only dilating 3cm i had an epi and loved it (i didn't feel a thing) and went from 3cm to 10cm in 4 hours. So my second was shorter. and as for pain well i could tell you whether DS birth was harder then DD i just no it REALLY HURT lol but i think thats expected.
I no epis arn't for everyone but if you are ok with then i would suggest it. My second labour was easier due to it.
Good luck with your results.
With DD I was induced using the gel. I had an 8 hour labour, contractions were so intense and close together I was yelling at the midwives to just cut her out.
With DS my waters were broken then I was hooked up to the drip after 2 hours. My baby was born 3 hours 24 mins later. I barely said a word my whole labour.
Had a shot of pethidine during both labours.
I was induced after labour stopped first time round, after 40 odd hours, so inducement was over very quickly and with an epi. It was a great relief to finally get him vacuumed out!
I was induced 2nd time round for family reasons and had a lovely 8 hour labour which built up gradually, i dilated very quickly from 6cm to 10cm (30 mins). Whilst it was not not painful, it was a positive drugfree experience.
I was induced with DS 10 days over due, gel night before, then ARM, then drip. He was posterior - 17 hour labour, strapped to monitors so i couldn't move. He was 10lb 4 oz, 57cm long! the gas the only relief I was offered and I was begging to die by the second stage! with DD i insisted on the induction the day before my EDD because scans showed another large baby and i wasn't going through that hell again, so i had gel and ARM the next morning. then i asked the doctor to leave the drip and see if the contractions started on their own. we went for a walk and at 10:10 am the first contraction hit. but it was managable because there was a definate rest between them. DD was born 4 hours later, 2:12pm, 9 lb 2 oz - no tears or bruising. we went home the next morning :) so i would say if you can avoid the drip and monitors its a much nicer (though still painful) experience! all the best :)
