My doc advised me that warm olive oil could be used to combat wax buildup in my DD's ears.

We then went ahead with immunisation and I forgot to ask how to go about it.

Has anyone tried this/know of how to administer the oil and clean the ear?

Isn't it funny how info now goes in and sits there until we have time to process it.......and then it's too late to ask any questions.

I'm sure having a baby severely delays your reaction time. :p

i had an earache once and my ex said his mum used to put it in his ears. But when he did it for me it went in and never came out and i felt worse like it was waterlogged. He probably just didnt do it right though. Id never heard of it myself.

not sure if it work the same with babies, but with big people......
put some olive oil in a small dish or bottle, and warm it by putting that dish is a bowl of hot water. the oil only needs to be warm so it feels less weird in the ear. then drop it in the ear - it will sort of fill up, and won't do in too far as the excess wax is there. then pop in a cotton ball and go to sleep. try for at least 2 nights before giving up. the oil will loosen the wax and it will sort of ooze out. water will make it worse. worked for me, but not sure how to do it for a baby. maybe just a drop??

I have never heard of this and DD gets alot of ear infections. I don't know if I would do it on a baby. Would probably try it on myself.
Maybe go back and ask how your supposed to do it?

DH had a blocked ear (swam in the pool and then combination of water and ear wax caused blockages in both ears) and the doctor told us it would have the consistency of cement  . DH couldn't hear a thing and we were advised to put olive oil in his ears every few hours to loosen the wax. We didn't warm it up though, just had DH rest his head on the table and I'd syringe it into his ear and then put a cotton wool bud in to stop it from leaking out. After a few days of this he went to the doctor to get his ears syringed. The olive oil doesn't get rid of the wax but makes it easier to syringe out.
Some people are just prone to have more wax in their ears and therefore a tendency to suffer from wax build up. I would definately ask the doctor how to go about doing it (olive oil) to a child before going ahead though.
Hope this helps!

Thanks guys, but i think we're back where we started Kirsty....i'm still not game enough to try it....I didn't end up making an appointment for Charlee, it's not worrying her now, and i have the putty for bath time which seems to be working....i've put it down to mostly teeth....as its not smelly like it was before....If i do go, i'll ask though ok?

Nah, I'm not game either. I am going with her teeth being the prob as well because she is still pulling on them madly.

Just have to be mindful though about getting water in them in case it makes it worse.

Easier said than done!!

Ok, so i went to the chemist to get some stuff, and while i was there, asked about the olive oil....He basically said that olive oil is the safest, as if there is a bit of infection, or pain there, it won't do any harm.....all it does is soften the wax.

All you do is put about 5-6 drops in each ear, and hold their head to the side for about 30 secs, to get it to go in properly. He reckons you might have to do it for a few days, before it starts to 'ooze out' (as he so nicely put it! lol). If that didn't work then maybe go to the docs, or maybe try some drops, but they are harsher.

I think i'll try the oil and see how we go...if she has any pain, then i'll take her to the docs...at least i know it can't do any harm....

Thanks for the advice girls, i guess i just had to hear it from someone myself and get him to explain it properly before i tried it....

I gave it a go with Charlee yesterday about lunchtime, and within an hour, alot of the wax had actually started coming out! I think i used about 6 drops in each ear? I'll keep doing it for a couple of days to get all of it out, as there's still a bit there this morning....

Just wanted to let you know it does work! :smiliedance:

Excellent! Glad it worked for you. Might give it a go if her ears bother her too much.
