I have seen everywhere through these threads and through the media that the labor party works for "avererage australians"

I think my family is a "below average" family...lol.
We're low income, only 1 child, a young family... I think we're don't meet the mark to be called the average Australian family...
BUT I figure that the average Australian is blue collar... man works, woman MIGHT work (thought perhaps not), have 2 or 3 kids, either rent or are struggling with their mortgage, send their kids to a public school, own 2 cars that are likely over 10 years old, etc etc etc...
That is my average Australian family.

I agree with sassymummy that is what I would define 'average australian' to be!

Times are changing, and 'average' is not what it used to be. I agree with SassyMummy to an extent, but nowadays, being single and childless is also statistically average. The whole 'average' thing is a bit of misleading in some ways.

Is that what you personally think is average?

That document seems quite outdated to me.
$100-$149 per week in rent in WA? Where, I'd like to see that.
We pay $300 per week (and that is the norm in perth) and we believe we are still not the average family but below the threshold.

its funny there are so many different views of average......I was average at school....
this is my family situation....
my dad is a lawyer
mum is a school teacher
they had 2 kids
we lived in the same house for 20years
both my bro and i went to private schools
our family cars are 13 and 14 years old
so
am i average?!?!?!?
my husband and i are business owners
no kids
we rent $350per week in the south west
but have 7 investment properties
2 dogs
I dont know where i fit in now!!!!!:o :(
Sorry. I don't think you're 'average' 7 investment properties? That's not average.

I say don't try and fit yourself in anywhere. In my opinion there is no average Australian anymore. People live such different lives and it's not all to do with how much money you earn or rent you pay.
Some people are in same sex relationships, some people are single, some people are married, some have kids, some have no kids, some like long walks on the beach others hate sand. :p

I think you have summed it up nicely.....mmm
does it bother you then that some people (apparently not me re:OJandMe) get summed up into the ball of "average"?

I feel I am an average Australian, have always felt that.
Growing up,
2 parent, 2 kid family.
My Dad a fighter pilot, my Mum a schoolteacher.
Went to a mix of public schools, private, and boarding schools.
2 car family.
Sometimes renting, sometimes paying a mortgage.
Now,
I am a relatively young single mum with 2 kids.
I work part time, study part time.
I pay a mortgage.
At the moment I have a car but am selling. Will most likely have no car.
My kids will be going to an independent school.
Feel average :)

What wrong with being average? Well I feel average, but I certainly am not of average intelligence, I don't have average parenting skills, I consider myself above average in many other things.
But so is HALF of Australia, so yeah, average!
Btw you sound pretty average to me, many of us have investment properties, so yeah, average :)

Hey don't get me wrong, I think it's excellent you're doing so well!
I hate the notion of 'average' I think it's limiting. I don't consider myself 'average' either. Maybe income-wise.... but at 23 doing a postgraduate degree, a full time Mum, DH also a student and a full time Dad. Our 'gender' roles are non-existant...
I don't think there is such a thing as 'average' except in statistics. :D

I don't think there is an average family any more. Which is why I laugh any time any of the parties claim they are looking out for the "average aussie".
I know some people consider themselves 'above average' ala Kim from Kath & Kim  People who are 'effluent'
I'm not sure what the definition of average or ordinary Aussie is, to be honest. But I think our Government should be looking out for all Australians, not just a select group.
