Hi!
My little boy was born ar 36 weeks, so not really that premmie, but was in the humidicrib for 3days for his oxygen levels & temp.

He is now 6months old (5 corrected) and we started him on solids....but now he is waking up in the night for more feeds (b/f) as well as wanting more in the afternoon/evening. It started on the first day we gave him the farex. :detective: Is it maybe a sign that he is not ready, and we should wait until his corrected age is 6months for more food? We have been told on most things not to worry too much about correcting his age, as he was close to term. Or is it maybe a co-incidence that a growth spurt started on the same day as the food did? TIA

Hi there,

Firstly congratulations on the birth of your son.
It should have nothing to do with it. My twins were born at 32 weeks and I started them at 7 months actual(5 months corrected). They like to go slow so it's a bit stressful at times.

Babies tend to have growth spurts at around the 6 month mark so it's probably a coincendence.

Also every child does things when they are ready. Don't stress too much about the food thing, you don't want it to be an issue.

Good luck

Tan dd1 did this..it was the solids. I stopped it and we went back to one waking, then I tried again and she bf constantly and was up 5 times through the night. It took until she was 9 1/2 months to be ready and we found out she had pretty serious food allergies at 10 months. My GP and ped told me the best thing I did for her was not force her to eat solids (CHN insisted I was starving my dd and told me to force her to eat them and just deal with the night wakings) cause it was a sign she simply wasn't ready. You'll soon know if it's the food or not if you take him off it for a couple of days again.
DD1 was not premmie, 10 days late, just slower in all stages of her development, including digestion!

I started Rafe a couple of weeks ago on solids when he was 5 and a half months and he was 5 weeks early. The dr and HCN told me that I could start him at 6 months actual age but I could tell he wanted more and he's handling it fine. Talon was 7 weeks early and I started him on solids when he was 7 months actual age (5 months corrected). He was fine too. You can tell when they are ready and to be honest your little one is probably not really very delayed in her development being 36 weeks so I wouldn't wait till she was 6 months corrected if it looks like she wants food now. IYKWIM? Good luck. I can hear Rafe crying for his lunch now!!!

I started Scarlett on solids at 4 months (only 9 weeks corrected) as she was really keen for it and the nurse told me it was up to me,She has gone great guns ever since and hasnt had one problem other than a teensy bit of constipation in the 1st few days.

just go with your mummy instincts on this and remember that babies have whats called a 'tongue thrust' reflex that will puch any solid foods out of their mouths if they arent ready yet.

good luck
