Isaac (10 weeks) settles really well at night but we have a battle during the day. I look out for tired signs like hand sucking, rubbing his eyes etc. and he looks SOOOO tired but he just wants me to carry him round and as soon as i try to sneak him into his cot his face screws up and its all over...so i pick him up and he immediately closes his eyes, so i put him down...and the cycle continues until he's so tired he drops to sleep.
i try to put him to bed a little bit awake so that he can (eventually) self settle, but sometimes the battle continues for so long that by the time he goes to sleep, he's completely exhausted and wouldn't have a clue if i'm there or not!
Should i let him cry? For how long? How long should it take to train him into self settling? Any ideas to try and still keep my sanity? :D Obviously the easy option is to wait until he's completely asleep on me and then transfer him, but i worry that this will be a problem later...when he weighs much more than he does now! :)

Thanks

Hi Deb,

It's so confusing isn't it? Poor things.

Maybe he just loves to be with you so much because you make him feel so safe and secure in this new big world of his....he's only 10 weeks old and sleeping on his own in a huge bed by himself is a little scary. Well that's what I think...could be wrong sorry. Maybe in another month or so you could try the self settling thing (helping him out with it) but for now he may just need extra comforting and cuddles to sleep while he's making the transition, it will make him feel secure enough that later on he will settle on his own easier and won't be so scared.

Doesn't help now I know...but maybe once a day or so you can try putting him down on his own to show him that's what you want him to do and pat him while he's laying on his side. If he doesn't settle then maybe he needs more time who knows...babies can be all over the place.

Not sure if you have a swing chair, but my bubs loves hers and sleeps in it for naps some days when I can't carry her around.

Sorry not much help. If you want any other tips though because the carrying around is getting too much, check out the sleep/settling thread.

deb hayden is doing the exact same thing at the moment!
perfect at night but impossible during the day!
i put it down to a growth spurt maybe?? its been going on since sunday for me, how long has issacc been unsettled during the day??
i try everything, swings bouncers, cradle, rocking chair, bouncing on the fit ball with him, nothing worx.
to get stuff done i just carry him round in the baby bjorn so i have my hands free at least to put washing on ect.
let me know if u figure it out n tell me the secret!
oh and has he been feeding more during the day cause that is what hayden is doing to.

Hi Gals

Rio is the same! Will not sleep in her cot during the day .... fine at night in there though

I normally let her nap in her Fisher Price swing chair. Or I resort to the Baby Bjorn too while i do chores around the house.

Good luck ladies :fingerscrossed:

there is a wonderful book and cd called sounds for silence.
Sure helped me out with Lachlan.

the other other thing i can think of is, be consistant - do the same thing in the same order every time its sleep/bed time. Helps them to understand whats about to happen.

Also have you tried a dummy? Even if it is just for sleep time?

Your bub might just want your smell so put a shirt you have been wearing or breast pads into the cot as well might help them to feel more secure

thanks for all your replies :)
isaac will finally go to sleep, but only for half an hour...none of these two hour sleeps the books speak of! i guess i should be grateful he sleeps reasonably well at night
sometimes i leave him in his swing if he falls asleep there. and he is getting better at being entertained if he's crying, can usually talk him out of it or take him to the mirror...he loves looking at himself

here's to a good nights sleep for all of us! :babydust2: :wizard:

Deb,

Aston is much the same  He hardly sleeps during the day - There is far far too much going on I think!

I've got 2 x 30 mins naps and 1 x 45min nap out of Aston today... I mean, I can't complain! It definately is something... He just doesn't seem tired. He will happily lay in his rocker, in his pram, in his cot, under the playgym and watch Mummy.. I guess I'm lucky in that sense. Yes I have days when I do feel as though I hold him all day long, but those days are few and far between...

Night times are fantastic.. Most nights he will go to bed at 7, wake at 3 and then back to sleep until 6..... Though some nights he sleeps through - About 7pm-5am....

I kinda figure if he is doing so well with his sleeping at night, than I can't really expect too much of him during the day. With him being awake during the day, I am finding he will feed every 2 hours... I guess the heat has something to do with it, and the bad news is, its only going to get worse..

I know you are busy moving house and what not at the moment, but we should definately catch up during the day - Some entertainment for our little boys!! :D

You definately aren't alone, It sounds as if many of us are in the same boat! Sorry I don't have any real suggestions - Just thought I'd let you know you aren't the only one! :)
