View Full Version : How do YOU keep cool? (Without the aircon!)
This buildup is getting to me! The muggy air just hits you like a brick wall..
(TBH, there's some kinda breeze today, but I'm still keen to push the ON button for the AC..)

I melt away in summer.
We have asked our landlord for an Aircon as it get disgustingly hot in this house, im talking high 40's even 50's! So waiting on a reply :fingerscrossed:, but yes in reply to your air con if you have it use it!
I would :devil6:
I've got the AC on in the rooms for the kids, I fear my next power bill!
AquaDevil, I hope you get an AC!! I have my fingers & toes crossed for you!
Our temps don't get that high, it's the humidity that is unbearable.. Very sticky.
I think we'll find a pool this afternoon, just to give the AC's a break :D

Cool baths, leave the water in and go back when needed...
All windows open, and damp towels hanging in the windows, as this creates a cool breeze..
Damp towels on every ones bodies...
Lots of iced water, milk...to keep from dehydration...
The heat comes out of your head, so keep your head cool with a cool, damp face cloth!
Oh and a spray bottle, spray a small mist onto yourself, kids occasionally to cool you down!
Free ways to stay cool!

We have A/C, but if i don't want to turn it on i find it's cooler having all the windows/blinds closed to keep the heat out.
And just having the fans going.
I remember when we first moved to Aus, the floor tiles kept us all cool! We'd lay a damp towel down on the tiles. It was too hot to even go swimming in our pool.
Thanks for your responses!
SFM, I'll definitely give those a go, didn't think to fill the tub, at least it's inside.
Feels like as soon as you step outside you'll turn to ash :D
Mel, I know what you mean about it being too hot to swim. For us, all the effort to go to my parent's house - getting in and out of the hot car, then prep for the pool for both kids, then jump in to a.. wait for it! a hot pool :D It just doesn't justify it! lol
But they do have some shade over the pool, but the water stays warm for most of the day.
Thanks again ladies ;)
I have missed a couple of build ups now (thank goodness) but i spent along time in Darwin. We never even had an aircon at my mothers house untill i was a teenager.
We had lots of "cooling off showers" we just went under the cold water for a min or so and hoped out and didnt dry off with the towel, just air dryed infront of a fan.
always had the fans on, keep the air moving, its soo muggy with out it.
On really hot nights we used to put an ice pack on our heads or back too cool us right down.
We always had the windows open, and doors to allow the breeze to come through the house.
The sprinkler on the varandah and sat under it for hours, we didnt have it in the back yard as it was too hot in the sun.
Go to casuarina, the library, palmo and meet friends or just go for hours if window shopping to get out of the heat and save your power bill.
cool the room down with the aircon before going to bed. Put timmers on the aircons so they come on an hour before everyones bedtime and go off and hour after eeryones asleep.
I hardly ever turned it off after i had DD1, it was too hot to sit and feed her or just watch tv, and when it wasnt on i tried to go out or sit somewhere cool.
I don't think unless you have lived through a build up or 2 you can understand just what its like. Its nothing like a summer interstate.
Shutting the windows doesnt keep the humidity out, making the room dark can help but you need to breeze to stay cool.
