Just wondering, when you are still breastfeeding after 12 mths do you need to give anything else? Like cows milk or toddler formula?
DD is not even 9 mths old and I was just thinking about when she gets to the 12 mth mark if she needs anything else apart from breastmilk? Obviously still feeding her solids though.
I probably sound soo naive right now but im curious....:o

Breast milk is the perfect food for humans, better than anything else.I dont see any reason why cow's milk would be needed is she is still breastfed at that age.
I wish I was still breast fed.It beat's paying heaps of money for something to supplement my diet that isnt even half as good.

No, babies who are breastfed don't need any other milk supplements. They probably DO need water, and definitely do need to at least be learning how to eat solids as meals, but they don't need any other kinds of milk.
HTH.

But after 12 months???
I wouldn't be holding off dairy after 12 months unless there is a need to with regards to allergies etc. Dairy doesn't have to be milk though, it can be cheese, yoghurt etc. If you want to give bub cows milk its your decision.

Disagree here.
I will hold off diary for as long as possible. Humans can function very happily and wholly without diary - after all, its only The West who are able to even digest diary. Diary is not an essential part of your diet.
Ask anyone who has gone off diary for a few months what happens when they reintroduce it.. eeeeck! Hold off as long as you can IMHO.
There is only ONE type of milk babies should be drinking ;) The one nature intended, specially designed especially for them - with everything they need, you deprive your child, not enrich them when you introduce other milks..
Like substituting organic apples for fries - kids will eat em, but not as good :)

We live & we learn. I was told that it was needed after 12 months. Didn't make any difference to MJ or our bf relationship :)

No, I wouldnt recommend giving other kinds of milks/formulas if you are still bfeeding...
Id give them water in a cup during the day too for those times in between feeds that they are only "thirsty" and not "hungry".
around the 12 month mark is classed as being an ok time (health wise) to start introducing other foods known for allergy risks.
Id even have alook on the WHO website, might provide some answers as well....im gonna check it out now!
as for dairy, i think after 12 months its fine, unless you have a predisposition or whatever its called to dairy allergies.
hope it helps!

I have fed 2 children past 12mnth and didn't have to give milk. Although it came in handy when I was late back from the shops, dh could just give a bit of milk and he didn't feel so stressed that the milk bar had gone out:D
As for other dairy I was told to start them earlier than 12mnths with yoghurt.
I would like too know how else do you keep their bones strong and healthy? I really would love to know this, from the ones that don't eat it.

I have to ask, for those of you who didn't give dairy whilst bf after 12 months, if you gave your child cereal, what did you put on it?
I have never during 30months of breastfeeding been able to sucessfully express so used cows milk.
