Can anyone recommend something for really dry and cracked hands. My hands, especially in between the fingers and on the knuckles are so dry and red that they are starting to crack and they're very sore. I've tried bepanthen but that's not doing much good. I'm drinking at least 2 litres of water a day, so I shouldn't be dehydrated

I used canesten cream .. got rid of the dryness between my fingers in days!

you can buy a tube of it from the chemist:)

It depends if there's an underlying cause or not - if you have a slight yeast infection (ie thrush) between your fingers, the canesten will definitely help - if not, probably not.

I also have very dry cracked skin on my hands, and it simply comes down to over washing them (I'm very sensitive to the SLSs in most soaps, and its a very drying agent). I just have to really pay attention to my hand - I exfoliate them with sugar and olive oil mixed into a paste about once a week, and rub an emollient (ie handcream) into them at least 3 times a day, more if they're REALLY dry...its the only way I can stay on top of it.

Any handcream that's not irritating will do - although ATM, as a special treat, I'm using the Jurlique Rose Hand Cream, which is lovely (but stupidly expensive at $50 a tube!). Try the above routine for a week or two and if it hasn't cleared up by then, get yourself off to the GP for a swap to see if it is thrush or something else underlying the dryness.

HTH :)

Oh good golly. I have been going to write this thread all week. I went to the Dr's this morning to get something prescribed for my dry hands. I've tried all the lotions and potions I can think of.
He prescribed betnovate and I am going to give that a go. I think it has a bit of steroid in it.
I'll let you know how I get on with it.
I'm also going to look it up on the net and see what information I can find out about it.

Is canestan cream for thrush? I think I've used that elsewhere

Busymummy it's used for fungal treatment

I use Gaia hand cream. Works a treat!

I think you can get it at some shops. I've seen it at coles, in the baby section. Make sure you get the one that's for excema and nappy rash

Avon's Silicone Glove Handcream, I have a friend who is a chef and swears by it. I think you can pick it up for around $3.00. Or Lucas Paw Paw Ointment, we use that for everything in our house and its great.

Oh I love the paw paw ointment too but it stays too greasy on my hands as my hands are all over dry and I need to apply it like a handcream. Plus its not helping heal the dryness :gloomy:

Thanks for the tips everyone, now I have many options to choose from  . The old pregnancy hormones are what's causing it, along with sore teeth and a bit of carpal tunnel :banghead: . I'd say it could also be due to the fact that I'm washing them more than ever atm (paranoid pregnant lady here  ), and when I dip them into water (like when washing the dishes) they really hurt so I must invest in some gloves, or get DH to wash the dishes :D

Definitely definitely gloves. My mum loads me up with them and the thin surgical like ones too for other chores - she's a fanatic but when you have dry sore hands I guess you've gotta be.
But DH washing the dishes is an even better idea

May sound crazy but it helps me...I use Alpha Keri lotion and my best tip is to buy cotton gloves...coat your hands in whatever lotion and put the cotton gloves on and go to bed...the next morning your hands are softer...

Just a thought

My hubby is a tradesman and really suffers with cracked, sore hands and the only thing that works for him is the Ego Skin Cream (not the QV one) that looks like this http://www.egopharm.com.au/Products.asp?ProductID=48&RangeID=25 You can get it from Chemist Warehouse and other chemists and it is awesome, so rehydrating.
