View Full Version : Signs of self weaning
I am having some issues with feeding DS and have tried tojust persist and get on with feeding , however it has been suggested he may be trying to tell me hes ready for a change! What are your thoughts?
He is never really aking for feeds i am just giving , he has stopped feeding to sleep , he fusses endlessly, pulls on and off constantly and really only feeds for a min , he is howeverfeeding well but very often through the night.
:wave:Maybe its the age. My DD is about the same age as your bub I think and she is doing the same. Has started feeding lots through the night whereas she used to sleep for 10 hours at night. And doesn't feed much through the day. My bub eats lots of solids, 3 meals and sometimes extra fruit as well, and also has water with her solids so maybe that is why? Sorry I don't really have any answers but will watch this thread to see if anyone else does.
I found a similar thing happened at a similar time. As I had always fed bub when she woke and called out in the night I never thought otherwise. When it increased to 4 times I tried just resettling her and it worked she did not need the milk that often and then ate a bit better in the day and I didn't get bitten as much.
Just be careful, as there were times when she actually was hungry so would not settle so I fed her.
She has recently learnt to stand up in the cot, so a whole new bundle of games has started, but as she settles when I go in and say shh shh I don't have to feed her.
Hope this helps - my motto became if I try this and it doesn't work I am in no worse position

I sometimes hear about this through the ABA, and some mums just persist and eventually the bubs come out of that phase and keep feeding. Have you thought about contacting a lactation consultant or counsellor through the ABA? They might have some good ideas and help put your mind at ease. I haven't been through that with breastfeeding, but when I'm on the ABA forum it seems like it's not such an uncommon thing.
Nursing strike can often be mistaken for self weaning but its extremely rare for a child your DS's age to actually self wean.
I would give the ABA a call and have a chat to get some strategies on how to get back on track.

Sometimes DS doesn't really eat anything in the day, and then, through the night he's a little piggy!!
Good luck - and of course, to your son:
GO BOOBIE MONSTER! GOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! :yelclap:
Thanks everyone :hugs: will call my LC asap thanks for the laugh allysophia :smiliedance:
Funny li'l blighters !
DS does this too. Goes off my milk during the day whilst working hard all night suckling away too keep the supply up
"Like, James.. if you fed steadily throughout the day you wouldn't have to stay up alll night making milk "
Sheesh, kids.
But I trust he knows what he's doing :)
Were having similar issues atm. My DS will only feed now in a dim room...he want's to feed more at night but I'm really trying to discourage it by offering the boob heaps during the day.
He has no problem knocking back his solids. I contacted the ABA and she felt distraction was our biggest issue. He wouldn't day feed for almost a week...I persisted and he's back on now.
Trying to get him to have a drink when were out and about is our latest issue
Hang in there :)
Thank you all for your respones we will just hang in there for a bit longer xx
