My DS has been constipated for the last 2 days and screams for almost 30mins before he can actually go to the toilet and this is only with me pushing his knees back and forths towards his belly.

I have started toilet training him recently (well he started trainging himself) do you think because he is now using the toilet that he might be trying to hold it in till he can tell me he needs to go and in turn is becoming constipated?

What would be the best thing for me to give him to make him regular again?

Parachoc is excellent. It not only softens the stools but it lubricates the bowel so it comes out easier. The only thing is it takes about 24 hours to work, so you need to nip the constipation in the bud before he gets too bad. You give them 10mils when they are bad, then once they pass the poos you keep them on a regular amount of 5mls every day to keep them regular. I've heard prune juice diluted in water works well, but my girl hates the stuff and always refused to drink it.

Our DD has the same prob from time to time.Unfortunately she has inherited my bowel:no: (poor poppit!) We tried parachoc but she hated the taste and it became an ordeal to get her to have some so on chemist advice we bought some Actilax and it works a treat. It is quite sweet so no dramas getting it down!! Good luck and I hope all "gets going" soon.

Thanks for the advice girls. The prune juice worked. I woke up to a nice smelly nappy this morning...so bad to the point i had to bath him.

please be careful and in future limit the fruit juice. Too much fruit juice often makes children poo because of fructose malabsorbtion. Consider what has caused the constipation for the future. A glass of warm water first thing every morning with a small squeeze of lemon in it often help the day to start off regular (even for children)

Constipation is just as often a symptom of dehydration as maybe lack of fibre - and in children is mostly due to dehydration
