View Full Version : Crying when laying down to feed

A week or two ago, DD (8 weeks) started crying and batting her arms at me every time I laid her down to feed her on the second side. It happened almost every feed for a few days, then only occasionally, then last night she's started doing it often again.

I don't think it's because she's not hungry, because if i persist, she'll nearly always end up taking it and feeding the normal amount. And it's not because of something that hurts on one side (she hasn't had the 2-month immunisations yet), and I alternate sides, and try changing positions when she starts crying (from sitting her in my lap to laying her tummy to tummy to the football hold) but nothing makes her stop except picking her up. I end up trying to shove in the nipple while she's crying (making sure her tongue is down) and after five minutes or so she'll take it, continue to fight for a few seconds, then suck away normally.

I know it's not personal, but I end up feeling like **** when this happens, especially in the evening when I just want to get to bed.
Has this happened to anyone else, or does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

maybe she could have reflux it sounds like it might be that, you should ask the clinic nurses they would probably know.

sorry can't help as my 15 week old has started doing this at feeds except she just takes the one breast!! In the end I resort to having to not feed her because she just screams murder when I put her anywhere near it.

So I will be looking out with avid interest on any ideas

i asked and she wasn't very helpful. she just said the same thing she did when i asked about DD being unsettled at night.. to check my diet (i haven't been eating anything different) and that it could be an accumulation of wind.
we also called the help line, and they said to try just feeding off one side per feed. we normally change the nappy between sides, so i've just been putting her on the same side after the change. she also said this would help her sleep longer. i've been doing that since last night, but she's still been crying after the change.
we've also been thinking about seeing an pediatric osteopath, so we asked about that, and she said that might help because it was a really quick birth - apparently the birth can have a bad impact on their little bodies.

that sounds like a good idea, sorry I couldnt be more helpful. when I was feeding my bubs he was really sensitive to lots of foods broccoli cauliflower and caffenine so I had to cut them out. I hope it all works out for you's.

i was just about to post a similar question!
My 14 week old baby has just in the past week not taking the feeding thing too well. I too offer her the first breast which doesnt have much milk in it (nothing comes out after 2mins of sucking) so i offer the 2nd one (have done this since birth) and normally she will suck till its empty (good 10mins) but in the past week, everytime i offer it to her she screams and pulls away the second the nipple touches her mouth.

i got frustrated with her last night because she was so hungry and would suck vigorously if i put a dummy in her mouth but as soon as the nipple goes in her mouth or the teat of a bottle (she's always been fine with the bottle too) she would scream so loud i would give up and not offer her anymore milk. I think she will begin to not put on much weight soon because she's getting a third of what she would normally drink.

She is however constipated...hasn't done a poo in like 9 days so not sure if that has anything to do with it. I'm giving her Salvital as per doctors instructions and will see how she goes...hopefully it does have something to do with the constipation but for some reason i don't think it does. I had the doctor check out her mouth in case there were ulcers or something but there isn't.

Looking forward to reading other posts to see if anyone has any suggestions as to what might be the cause of our babies suddenly not wanting to feed!
