My DD who is 6 months old has always slept in a bassinette in our bedroom beside me, and although I would love to have kept her there forever :) the dummy problem, putting it in and out 10 times a night, as well as not being able to put herself back to sleep on her own without the dummy, and also being the most restless sleeper, I was lucky to be getting 2 hours straight sleep a night, so something had to change.
I put the controlled crying thing off because I knew it would break my heart, and I would be crying more than her, easier said than done when someone tells you to walk away and keep yourself occupied when your precious one is crying :( .
Anyway, I thought I would give it a try for 1 day/night and if I/we were too upset I would grin and bare it. The first time took nearly an hour for DD to go to sleep (without her dummy/being rocked etc). I guess I was lucky because although she had tears (me too) she did not cry so much as grizzle, so it never got to the point where I thought she was too upset to carry on, and believe me I have a very low threshhold when it comes to "anyone" crying. "I always told my husband I could be a professional mourner" because I could cry at anyones funeral :o
She slept in her own cot (and looked very lonely) that night, woke up 3 times during the night, but again only grizzled. It was so great not having the dummy to worry about (although I think they are a great comforter). Now I don't know if I should give her dummy back when she is grizzly during the day but not for bed/sleep or go cold turkey and throw it away completely.
Phew!
