If you like Indian food there are some pretty good, cheap and cheerful, restaurants on and around Crown street in Surry Hills.

a relatively cheap way to do an expensive Indian restaurant is to order a place at the chefs table in Nilgiri's in St Leonards. For a set price (can't remember exactly how much) you eat whatever the chef and everyone else at the table decides, and he cooks it in front of you. Nilgiri's food is very good in my opinion.
