Hi all! I have just joined and am really needind advice on feeding. Bubs is 5 and a half months old and is just drinking less and less each day. he was on s26 since he was 8 weeks old but have recently ( 4 days ago ) changed to Nan Ha. The reason for the change was because he just because really unsettled during a feed and little by little was drinking less and less each time. Now i am used to giving him small amounts during the day but the nan is quite different to s26 on the number of feeds per day reccommended. He is still unsettled during feeds unless he is tired so all his feeds are done when he is sleepy.

Oh I am sooo stressed out about feeing times because he just seems to hate his milk. He is having 2 solid meals a day which he likes.

On the tin of nan it reccommends bubs 6 months plus require 210mls 3 times a day.
is this based on the fact that baby has 3 solid a day?

I'm scared he wont get enough milk if i go to 3-4 bottles a day.At the moment he is drinking approx 700mls a day.is that enough?

would love some feedback because i am going mad.

First time mum so very concerned

Hi Tron
I am no expert on these things as I am a first time Mum too and my bub is 4.5 months old and not on solids yet.
However, if bub is content (iykwim), still putting on weight and is pooing normally I would think he is getting enough.
The amounts on the tins are recommendations and averages, not every bub is the same.
My DD has 6-7 150ml bottles a day, but she doesn't always finish them all so I estimate she is getting around 900mls a day and she is thriving
Sometimes I do a bottle which is 120ml formula and 30ml boiled water to increase her water intake, expecially when I give her a little bit of solids other than that I just let her tell me when she has ahd enough.

Is your baby teething at all? DS is teething so he wont really drink formula unless he's tired or if he does its only 30 ml's here and there. Before this he was having 200ml's every 4 hours and 3 solid meals a day. He's 6 months old and he's been like this for 2 weeks. the doctor said it was ok as long as they are still peeing like they usually did and sleeping.

the back of the formula pakc is only a guide... not all babeis are the same..

if your bub is haveing the same amount of wet nappies and is happy there is nothing to worry about...

he could well be teething though,.. if you get concerned see your gp or chn

As a general guide, each day babies drink 150 to 170 ml of formula for each kg of weight. So take your bub's weight, multiply by 150 (or 170) and then if you divide by the number of feeds each day you'll get an estimate of bottle size. Older bubs eatting a fair amount of solids will start drinking less formula but should still be having 4-5 wet nappies every day.

My DD always had more bottles than suggested on the forumula tin. That's just how she was. So if your bub prefers 4 or 5 smaller bottles and that fits into your daily schedule then I say go with it. In a few weeks or months you may find that one or more bottles gets dropped from the schedule, but there's no need to hurry it.

My 6 month old DD drinks approx 500mls a day and has 2 to 3 solid meals of probably of approx 100g.

This seems a lot less to me than other bubs are having but she is reasonably happy and wetting nappies and her weight is good so I guess all is OK.

I know how you feel as i went through a similar problem a while ago, i use to stress about it alot but now i don't as my DD is happy heathy and putting on about 200gms a week. She is having 3x200mls a day and 3 solid meals. They say at this age around 600-800mls a day milk is recommended, what is says on the back of the tin is just a guide ;)

This is reassuring! I have been worried about the amount of milk my DD (6 months old) drinks too. She has two solid feeds of 120grams each & 3 210ml bottles. I thought that was a lot less than she should be having, but she is wetting her mappies & is still chubby, so I figure she must be ok. I am going to the doc on Thursday for a check up & I will ask questions about it then.
My concern is that the last time I wieghed her (about 4 weeks ago), she had only put on 300grams since she was 12 weeks old. She is a lot longer now & chubby so I am not too worried!
