I have been monitoring my blood sugars at home for the last few weeks. I am 15 weeks preg. I dont have GD but had an elevated result with my last pregnancy. As we are unsure if the result was GD or because I was suffering with a gastro illness at the time we are being cautious.
I was told that my fasting result should be under 5.5 and my 2 hours after eating should be under 7.5.
All my results after eating have been well under 7.5 but for the last 3 days my early morning result was 5.6 or 5.8.
Do you think that means I have GD? I am seeing my obs on Thursday so I will show her my results but just want to know what your experience is and prepare myself.

hey :)
i had gd with my last pregnancy also, so i understand the concern. i'd definately show your caregiver the results - its a great thing you're monitoring your results.
however, i found this on a website -
Gestational diabetes usually develops during the second trimester — sometimes as early as the 20th week, but often not until later in the pregnancy.
heres the website - http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/gestational-diabetes/DS00316/DSECTION=1
so to my mind, if you're going to develop it this time, your body might not have actually developed it yet? but ask your caregiver
Hi, in my case it did. Like you, I started testing early and my daytime ones were OK but fasting was around 5.6-5.8 too.
I saw the Ob then the endo. The endo explained that 90% of the population actually have a fasting of 4.5 or less so that anything over 5.3 is actually relatively high. Sorry for the possibly bad news...
(Last time I was diagnosed at the routine 28 week test and straight on insulin, this time on insulin since 10 weeks).

Oh I've never had insulin or anything. Did you have a glucose tolerance test before starting insulin?
I have been on insulin from 9 weeks in my last two pregnancies ... I would ask for further testing and for close monitoring

I saw my OB yesterday im 28weeks this is my first pregnancy and my sugar reading was at 5.8 in the morning when i went in for my GTT and he said my results were normal and were not considered high risk...
However when I plan to have a second child i need to do a GTT at 15weeks due to me having PCOS..
Wait n see what your OB says to put yr mind at ease.. Everybody is different through every pregnancy.

Hi,
I have GD and your fasting result should be less than 5.5 and than 2 hours after meals it should be less than 7.0.
my fasting result was never below 5.5 so I have to give my self insulin (protaphane) at bed time.
and if it gets below 3.5 you have low blood sugar levels and are at risk of a Hypo.
I hope this helps you.
Good luck :)

Thanks for that. Was your 2 hour after eating high also? Or are you just on insulin because your fasting was above 5.5? Was your fasting like mine, about 5.6 -5.8 or higher?
My 2 hour after eating is usually anywhere between 5.2 - 6.7.

Hi,
My after dinner reading was high as well as my fasting so I have to have insulin with dinner as well to help bring BSL down.
my after breakfast and lunch reading vary, sometimes they are higher than 7.0 but mostly stay around 5.6 - 6.8. But as you progress into your pregnancy they get higher and so then you may have to have insulin 4 times a day.
They don't like you getting over 7.0.
But don't panic until you have your glucose test :) .
Cheers

Well no gestational diabetes!!!:smiliedance:
All my readings were nice and low after eating so Dr is happy with that. She said to stop testing so often and just test twice a week. If I notice they are high I can give her a call but she is happy with the way things are and there is no evidence of GD (yet...I suppose, but I guess I will keep a close eye just incase).
Thank you so much for your replies.
